As I'm sure most of you fine folks will know, the beloved Ford and GM diesel engines in use now use piezoelectric injectors compared to our beloved common rail injectors.

I've had the privilege of discussing the difference between the two with a very experienced person in the industry.

From what I gather, the CR injectors we use are designed for anywhere from 300k to millions of miles (dependent upon use and engine) of effective life. The piezo injectors however were designed for passenger vehicles and were only designed for a lifespan of 250k miles or so.

Obviously there are always exceptions but I think this is very telling.

There are other things, but those are the ones I found most interesting. And should give us a good, fuzzy feeling inside. ;)

Both are common rail injectors. The difference is in their actuation- the injectors in the Cummins use a conventional solenoid for actuation, where piezo injectors work on the principle that certain crystals will change size when subjected to electric current, and do so much more rapidly than the solenoid, hence their use in more and more vehicles for control of noise and emissions.
