I have a question about fuel injectors. I spent the last 3 weeks reading eveything that I could find on the 1998.5 dodge ram 3500 24 valve..injectors. I learned that there is an injector for automatic trans and one for a manual trans. Both have their own part number. The manual transmissioon has a bosch part # where the last 3 digits are..... 629 and the automatic transmission is the same with the last 3 numbers being ....630.

I started looking for the injectors on line and noticed that they were selling both of the above part numbers as compatible with my truck. The manual transmission injector is for 235hp, my truck is 215hp. My truck is an automatic transmission. There must be a difference here, otherwise they would sell a..... universal injector, and not have to make one for an automatic transmission/ manual transmission.
It fits but I bet so does all of them. These venders even have in big letters "Guaranteed to fit" OMG! who cares if they fit, maybe they shouldnt fit if they are the wrong injector for your truck. That way we would know its the wrong injector and save ourselves some problems down the road.

What i find disturbiNg here is I pulled one of my injectors and its a bosch injector with the part number (last 3 #s are....629.).... THOSE ARE FOR 235HP MANUAL TRANSMISSION.
I bought this truck used from a friend, exfriend. I have no idea what all he did to it but I know its been in the shop more then its been on the road since we bught it. And I know my husbnd would hide or throw away the invoice so I wouldnt see it so I have no clue whats been done to it. Im thinking the fuel injectors have been changed. And could be the reason the truck is a pos pig. Thats why I am doing the work on it from now on.

Im thinking that ....if it didnt matter they wouldnt have made 2 different injectors, with 2 part #s and hp and label them for manual transmission/ automatic transmission.

Even worse than this is ...I found , online brand new injectors with the ...630 bosch #. Iebay. I sent the guy a note making sure they were for the automstic transmission 215hp. he treated me like a moron and said Im overthinking it. I ordered the ....630 bosch part. AND HE SENT ME THE.... 629 FOR
MANUAL TRANS 235HP

whats worse than that is .......
MY husband knowing all of this says he "thinks" it will be ok. they were the ones we took out!!!!! and he put them in when i was at work.

Someone please tell me what happens when ya put 235hp manual transmission fuel injectors in a truck that is a 215hp automatic transmission.
So when it breaks down again I know where to look first.

Here is another question. Ok he changed out the fuel injectors. When ya take off the valve rocker arm, do you have to adjust the valves before ya put it back on?

Welcome to TDR. You'll find a lot of info here, just need to look for it.

That said, I'm not trying to treat you like a "moron" but you are overthinking the injectors.

Dodge spec'ed the manual to 235hp and the auto to 215hp because they felt like that was all the auto transmission and the clutch could handle. We know that the engine is not limited to those HP numbers because Cummins offers the same base engine that is in your truck in other applications with a LOT more HP than that. The differences in these HP specs are due to things like injectors, injector pumps, cams, piston design, and programming.

There's not enough difference between these two injectors to spit at. Using either of these injectors in either application would probably not even be noticeable and will definitely not cause your engine to break down.

What kind of problems have you had to label your truck a "pos pig" and give you so much trouble that you expect it to break down again?

The amazing thing on the 2nd gen 24v trucks for the same or less money you can buy 275 hp injectors that will run better and usually at least match the fuel mileage. So yes I would say you are overthinking the injector part number choices

However, will not the 275hp injectors tear up her auto trans ?

The injectors will have less effect on the trans than ones left foot will.*

I agree, please list any trouble codes you may have and describe what the truck is doing. Unless you have a ton of miles or ran a bunch of bad fuel through your engine there is probably nothing wrong with the injectors.*

The 275s are much easier than any BOX or programmer on the trans, now something that no one has mentioned yet is that early production 98 24 valve connector tubes are not considered re-usable.The valves do not need to be adjusted if great care is taken to get the correct rocker back in it's origional home.JR is right, that generation of injectors are very durable and not a problem except in very rare cases

You said look at your signature, I don't see any signature, it doesn't show up, welcome to the TDR, every thing you need to know about your Dodge will be answered on this site, Monte

I can not find any reference to that in any Cummins manual or Chrysler manual ? Kind of sounds like when the dealer tried to tell me you couldnt buy the o rings for the tube without biting new tubes

We we need to know a lot more info on what's going on with the pos pig to be able to help you ? Are you making oil hard to start or what ? Anybody that says your problems are coming from having the manual transmission spec injectors will also be trying to sell you a blinker fluid system flush and muffler bearings races and seals

It was not in any manuals, both Cummins and dodge published bulletins,

Did not know that I guess if you was making fuel or having other tube related issues it would be good to change em . I'm really hoping we hear more about the pos pig in question so we can figure out the problem
