This is the vehicle, a rare 1980 W400 4x4 dodge 6 wheel military ambulance. Original paint was AF blue. This currently has 9K miles on it and has the original 360 auto drivetrain.

In my backyard is a 01 24V ISB on a trailer. The ISB has no transmission and I think it was attached to an automatic (3500). The engine is complete but for the vacuum pump I just donated to my 99RAM. The engine is still connected to the frame rail segments from the wreck.

For the experienced:

  1. Is this a good place for a cummins conversion?
  2. What chassis electronics does this ISB need to function? The engine ECM and harness is here but no chassis electronics.
  3. Can this chassis support such an engine?
  4. What transmission/driveline should I use to connect the cummins to the ground?
  5. Any idea what size budget I should start with before setting this in motion? (assuming no surprises in the engine or truck)

    [/list=1]

Honestly at this point I am trying to decide if I should sell the engine and truck or save up my coins to do the conversion... :)

Others are more knowledgeable about the electronics. I think you will end up trying to fool the ecm that the engine is still in a Ram. That means pcm, wiring harnesses, etc. It would be a lot easier to use a 12 valve engine, or even a P pump converted engine, to avoid the electronics associated with the injection pump.

Thanks Joe

FYI I still love your clutch which seems to be the only thing in the 99 that is not having problems...

I started CDL training and can really appreciate how that clutch is more 'truck like' than I knew when I bought it.

I can help

Being the nice guy that I am I’ll save you from all the grief and aggravation you’ll have trying to make that 24V work. I’ll make the ultimate sacrifice for my TDR brother by taking that vehicle off your hands, I have a nice ‘97’ 12V just itching to be installed. :D

hate to say it but I would bet that the electronics will eat crazy$$$$$$$!! 12v make it much easier. If I had the $ for your truck I would drop in my 12v and gutbag(only till the propper nv5600 came in the books!) but ohhh wouldn't I love to get my hands on your truck!!!Oo. :{ :--) gvw must be 14-15K! great for plowing and hauling my skidsteer!!HD my rear!! this is a superHD DODGE CUMMINS

STROKE THIS FORD BOY!!!!!!!!!

that's what kind of truck that would be. dual 6" stacksohhh

Chainsaw

Animal, still in alaska...

Nice to hear from you again... takes me back to the days when my truck was new, VA was a new concept to the TDR and the ESPAR was just a warm dream... .

Hey, if I drive the ambulance to Montana in January on Gas can I drive back on diesel?... .

Mr. Boyle. . I had a guy in the midwest tell me for something like $7500 he could add a 2nd rear axle to it. God if I only had the cash.

Money is tight so if I decide to part with the ambulance or 55 powerwagon or the 24V, I will post them on this site before ebay... . I am starting to drive school bus in January and hope that will be my 'bombing' mad money for 2004 (if I survive the kids)...
