Looking for input on larger tires for my stock rims. Anyone who has any advice and/or stories regarding performance of different tires (on whatever ground conditions), I'd like to hear it. Thanks in advance.

I've been very happy with the performance of my 285/75R16 BFG AT KO's. I've got about 35,000 miles on them now and they have about 15K left on them. The ride on-road is better than the stock tires (can't remember the brand) and they work great off-road too (dirt trails, and sand dunes - haven't taken the truck into much mud).

Running 285\75R16 BFG Mud-Terrains and they work well. Noisy outside, but the cab is fairly well insulated so you don't hear them much. Good ride for the most part, just a little harsh over sharp bumps. They are great in the snow and off road, but a little slick on wet pavement or ice. Had Michelin LTX M\S beforehand, and the were a really nice on road tire, but very poor off road.

I have the same tires as Steve. I like them very well. They ride nice and aren't very noisy. The only downside I have found so far is that they do not clean well in the mud without quite a bit of tire speed. A more open tread design would be better suited if you are in the mud a lot.

I'm not a fan of BFG's, but that's only because the price scares me off. I've had great luck with Dunlop Radial Rover RV's. Unfortunately they only offer a 255/85 which is the same hight as a 285 but a little narrower. I don't think you have to worry about snow where you are, but these tires performed very well in the white stuff.

Cooper makes a Discover ST which is an agressive semi-mud terrain tire. We have a set of these on a truck at work and they are relatively quiet for their agressiveness, and are good in snow and very good in the mud.

We have a set of Discover AT's on another work truck and these are really quite and less agressive than the ST's. They are not to good in the mud because of the less agressive tread. The ST's did some in a few different load ranges, but I'm not sure about the AT's. I hope this helps.

Cooker,

Where'd you get the Rovers and how$$$?

Y2K Red Stealth Sport 2500 4X4 QC SLT+, 5-spd, 3. 54 anti-spin, 265-75-16 LTX’s (There ain’t no such thing as options, cause ya gotta have it all, including: DC’s dead cow/vinyl interior and don’t stop anti-lock brakes. ) Stock, but not for long. Oops, too late. What silencer ring? (More fun than my 98 SST)

The best tires I've had so far are Hercules All terrain lt265/75/16. They look much like the Bfg A/T's(and cost less). They are quiet on road, and work well in the dirt, and handle well. The only reason I took them off was that I was about to take a 6000 mile trip, and didn't think they'd last through the trip. Gave the tires to a friend, and he has gotten 15k out of them with a good bit of tread left, and I already had 25+ on them. My biggest complaints are they are wear fast at first and are a C rating. I planned to replace them with BFG's but the tire shop didnt have them- used the Michelin LTX A/T- junky tire- make the steering wander and suck in the mud. I have been stuck too many times... they are also only a C rating(good thing I dont haul a lot). Best thing about them is the wear- with 20k+, only slight wear is noticeable. If you could find a heavier rating they might be decent street tires. I would like to switch to a real mud tire on the 19. 5" wheel sets, but they cost too much. Anyone have any experience with wear of these big mudders? Maybe in the long run it will be worth it...

Gotta say the BFG M/T, running 285x75Rx16's on my truck and it gets me out of some of the worst stuff, also drive it for 160 mile a day commute to work, have around 30,000 miles on them. The only problem was the result of 2 3" nails going through the side wall of a rear tire, put two large plugs in them and ran for another 4 months before I had to replace it. I drive on some of the worst highways as well as sand/red clay/black gumbo and everything in between and never been stuck with them.

I have the Michelin LTX M/S. I liked the way the original tires wore, so I stuck with the brand, just went a little bigger.
I do not go off-road. They are very good in the rain, and IMO good in the snow.
The original Michelins were good in the rain until they replaced them @ 60+ K miles. I rotated the Orig's one time.
About 90% of my miles are empty.

I have the Kelly Safari AWR in 285/75r16 load D, and I will never buy them again. I have about 25,000 Miles, and they are wearing fast. A friend has the Identicle truck as me ( I had to order twice due to the first one on plant hold for a trans problem) and he has the same tires, and is equally as un-impressed with the wear. the noise and performance is ok, but the durability terrible, I'm going back to BFG next.

First off I'd like to agree that the Kelly Safari AWR are total junk. I had a set on a Chevy a couple years back, and these had to be the worst tires I have ever owned or driven. Sorry for the rant, but they were total junk.

RKohn,
The last set of Dunlop Radial Rover RV's I bought here in town. They were put on a vehicle other than my Ram, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy them again. I priced the 255/85/16 last fall from a tire distributitor here in town and if I remember correctly they were right around $120/tire. The only reason I didn't go with them is because I bought a set of Michlen LTX M/S takeoff from a frined for less than 2 new Dunlops would have cost me. Otherwise www.etires.com has these listed for $130 and that includes shipping. BTW my father has a set of the Dunlop Rover AT's and he has been happy with them.

Just a FYI, incase someone does not know. Michelin owns the BFGoodrich, but still produce the BFG's under their original name.
