Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) input shaft change out

I know this has been run through the mill and I have done a search on this subject but here goes. If you change out the input shaft on a NV4500 do you have to check the shims or can you pull the retainer and install the new shaft and bearings and go with it. I have read pros and cons on this subject and some says do and some don't. I don't yet that I will have to but I am trying to cover all bases if I do.

Mine was done from the front only, just an R&R. New bearing and retainer also.
