My son got a neg driving ticket because when he turned real sharp his inside tire made noise. My truck does this if I turn sharp also. Before he takes this to court I would like any of you that has this happen to reply so he can show the judge that he is not lying about this. There will be no mention about your real names and no one will be asked to attend.

Thanks for any replys

It happens to me all of the time. If your son has the anti sway on the back it will unload the inside tire a little when he turns. Also if you remove the sway bar when you are unloaded your tires will last slightly longer.

If you look at my sig. I have a 1 ton dually. When I had regular street thread tires the insides allways spun when I turned a corner.

I have steped up to a more aggressive thread tire and the spin has almost stoped. But if I happen to hit some fluid or apply a little to much throttle it will spin them.

I spin my inside tires when making turns all the time. More so to the right, because that is a tighter turn but both ways. I have to work at not making mine slip. Sounds like he just got a uneducated or a I know it all cop. Bill

Mine does it, too

And I have an open diff. But right now, I think I'd fail a MO "safety" inspection; bald tires. Mom's does it too, around real tight turns if you go a little fast. Gotta hand it to the cop- he's fostering that hatred/ animosity good and early. As long as your son wasnt making any effort to drag race or anything, I dont see why a reasonable judge would uphold it, but you never know. But it would be the cop's word agains tyours, and you know who wins that every time. Getting off my anti LEO soapbox before I publish a novel on the subject.

The inside tire will always have a tendency to make noise because the truck is trying to pivot on the inside tire. A right

hand turn is worse because it is a tighter radius turn and the

reaction of torque tries to lift the inside, RH, tire. A limited slip

differential makes it worse and with a locker it is almost

impossible to make even a moderately tight turn without slipping

the inside tire a little. If you drive across a painted line during a

turn it makes it sound even worse. These are from my own

personal experience.

It might be worth it to note that a pick-up is worse than a car

because of the longer wheel base, during a turn the difference

in radius between the front and rear tires is greater as the

wheel base increases. The front tires turn to follow the arc of

the turn and the rear tires can't.

I have to add my 2 cents worth here also. I have found that the older the tire the worse it gets and I don't mean by an old tire a bald tire. I just put on a new set of tires on the rear and I could feel the grip improve right away. Your son probably got his ticket more because of his age and a cops lack of common sense and vehicular knowledge.

Dave,

I can relate to your son's situation. When I was in High School me and some friends were going to see a movie and I got pulled over by a over zealous rookie Officer. I had a 82 Z28 that had the 165 HP 305 (Totally gutless) in it with a 5 speed and 3:73 rear gears with a real tight posi unit. I made a right turn from a stop sign in Edina MN and my rear tires chirped a bit, next thing I know I was being wrote up for careless driving because the cop said that if my tires were making any noise I must have sideways and speeding even though he did not see the car do either. I was just turning the corner at normal speed and had to take a left right away to turn into the movie theather parking lot.

When it came time to fight the ticket in court I and my friends explained the situation to the Judge and I even told him that if he did not believe the tires sounded like that when turning corners that he could come out to the parking lot and see for himself, which he did. Needless to say the Judge threw out the ticket and I walked out of court showing the Officer the BIG smile on my face:D :D .

I hope that your Son has a Judge as understanding as the one I did.

Best of luck

Kurt.

What!!!!!!!

Summertime? Hot payment? Dually truck?

What was the cop doing on his knees in the intersection listening for tires chirping?

A heavily loaded delivery truck will squeal like a pig and leave rubber on turns like that and this yokel is writing tickets for noise on sharp turns?

Now if he had hazed the intersection and left a nice dual stripe black arc I could see the reasoning but this has got to be the height of idiocy!

I am curious, what reason did the cop use for writing a ticket? Disturbing the wildlife with tire 'chirps'?

If Lake Evans is anywhere near the Seattle mess, the roads are filled with maniacs bent on destruction and self-immolation and this is what our tax dollars pay for. Tickets for chirps!

Jeeez, slow day on patrol I guess.

I contest all tickets as a matter of course. Make them prove you actually did something wrong. If you can introduce even a small amount of doubt most judges will toss the ticket. They are jaded at seeing the parade of goof ups thru their court and usually anybody that will offer a reasonable proof of ridiculous behaviour by the cops that wastes their time will catch a break. If you have a camcorder recreate the alleged incident with sound and offer to demonstrate in the parking lot. Remember, if the cop doesn't show the matter is dismissed immediately. That has happened more times than I have ever had to show proof. Good luck and let us know how it comes out.

UPDATE

The Lake Stevens PD called Levi and told him the charge was being reduced to an infraction and possibly droped completely. More on that as I hear more.

But thanks to all you guys, we have a large collection of replys from people with the same kind of truck with the same kind of turning issues.

If and when this goes to court, the judge will have to face facts and see that this officer is either enexperienced or just wanted to make something out of nothing.

It is common knowledge that Lake Stevens is not friendly to young people. Even the Sheriff's admit that they are prone to over reacting and having an adittude.

Well, thank you all for helping Levi with this. He is not a member of TDR (no computer) but I wish to relay his heart felt thanks. I think he now see's why I belong to this group.

Thank you all again
