Is it possible to install a lockup transmission('94- ) in a 1st gen. ? I have an appointment next week to have a Dunrite transmission built and installed in my '92. Thought I might have better performance with the lockup TC.

The lockup is computer controlled and is the only sticky part of having a lockup in the first gen truck. All the parts to do the job are available including the controller but it is my understanding that the controller is pricey. I am driving a 97 with lockup some of the time and I can tell you that the lockup is very useful as to mileage. As far as functionality, it feels like another gear or perhaps like double overdrive.

My main ride is a 93 with 500k miles and Getrag. I have kept the getrag running for small change compared to upkeep on an automatic. While I definitely like the convienence of the automatic, I am leaning toward changing the 92 automatic that I have to manual.

Michael Miller told me about a shop in Iowa that does the Cummins ready automatics and that they can do the lockup stuff. From what has been posted on the TDR, the aftermarket folks have done a complete job of providing some really tough stuff for the Cummins ready automatic.

With the price of fuel, I think that over time, lots of owners (myself included)will be doing the lockup to save on operating cost.

The 47RE is electric controlled lock-up and the 47RH is hydraulic controlled lock-up. I would think that you would go with the 47RH... . no switch and no controller.

How much more mileage do you think you get with the lockup? You can make your own bio-diesel for 50 cents a gallon, plus your time.

Mileage? Well I can't say. I get paid to haul and I don't look at the price or amount, I just pay the total and that is less in the truck with lockup. The 97 with lockup will burn less fuel than the 93 with Getrag on a round trip and will go 10 miles per hr faster overall loaded and empty average trip time. (Actually it will go way faster empty but I can maintain speed with the rest of the drivers on the interstates. ) A friend has an 89 and he drives VERY conservatively. He gets 20mpg highway. And it doesn't even have OD.

So actually, your foot is the primary factor on mileage. (Mine is a bit heavy)
