I am about to order my DTT VB and tc I am very mechanically inclined and have built a few prerunner and trailtrucks from the ground up. I have been checking into local labor and it seems that the guys are clueless and the labor is insane. I have been thinking of doing the tc and the vb my self. Other than the transmission just being so heavy is this a "leave it to the pro" swap out or is it a "do it at home in your own garage and take your time project"?. My truck has 52kmiles and has been very well serviced. transmission is like new and has the fluids and filter changed like it should. any pointers would help. anybody done this transmission work themselves?

If you are just going to install the VB and TC it's no real problem. Except the cross member. The frame has to be spread a little bit to remove and replace it. OR vigorous use of a jeep tool (short handled 8 lb hammer). However, to get the best results there are some upgrade parts that go in the transmission that require a partial disassembly. A service manual is a MUST. E-mail me if you want to discuss some details.

TC & VB

Deezel4X4, I have done this operation myself with the exception of the VB. I had my local Dodge dealer do a complete reseal on my transmission just for peace of mind while I had it out and they offered to put the VB in for me when they reassembled the unit. I had been getting a little 2-3 slippage once in awhile so the timing was fine all around. My experience with DC was a very positive one. If you have any possible access to a lift and a transmission jack, by all means take advantage of it. When you pull the TC be ready for it. The thing weighs about 60 lbs. I judge. I did a DTT TC & VB as well as a Smart Control. I added a Mag-Hytec DD pan as well. The whole operation is very straight forward from a mechanical aspect. Transmission crossmember can be a bear. If you can get someone to help, this is also a good idea. I also did the rubber fuel line replacement at the same time. Since the transmission was already out it was real easy. Air tools also speed up the process. Time out was 2 hr. 10 min. Time back in was 2 hr. to button it all up. This does not include the rubber fuel line fix or the change out of the cooling lines I also did. My whole experience has been a very satisfactory one with my truck up to this point. And I'm not finished yet. Any questions on any specifics just send me a PM.

Good luck, John

Gentleman,

Follow whatever Bill K. says about doing the internal modifications! They need to be done or your going to have

problems down the road. Been there, done that and paid the price. . I now have DTT products and am a very happy camper

with their products and ESPECIALLY their service.

In reference to the crossmember. If I'm not mistaken, it's a tapered design that has to be pushed straight up about 2"

then it can be pulled straight back and out. Mines been out twice and just a slight tap (upward) with a hammer and the puppy is loose. Just my peso's worth. Your gonna love the DTT TC and VB. Have fun.

bigkavr,

Some of the cross members come out pretty easy and others are a big PITA. In my case I had to make a tool to spread the frame just a little. The first time I had the transmission out it was really a chore.

I think the internal mods are essential. Especially the lip seal in the front clutch pack. Too much pressure leakage without it.

Hey! I did mine myself and ended up eating peanut butter sandwiches for about six months.

I am very mechanical enclined and have alot of motor experience, but very little transmission exp. . This bit me in the butt bad. I did not do something right. Cause I lost all the bands and fried the valve body. . Ended up replacing VB and just about the hole inside. . This time I used a real transmission man and got Bill K's parts and advice.

My advice! let someone do it that knows trannys... Please.

This mistake cost me about 3500$ big ones to get right. .

Could of replaced it easy for that. .
