I just got my Truspeed module in yesterday and I am fixing to install it... It seems simple enough with the exception of one detail: Where is the wire harness that has the wire that the module splices into located? The instructions indicate that it is near the rear of the transfer case, but at first inspection it is not readily apparent where it is. Just looking to see if anyone else who has installed this can put me on the right track before I start pulling lots of stuff apart!

Thanks for your help!

Otis.

I don't have any idea, but please post the outcome so we will all know. This tru speed box is much less $$ than the abott and I am planning on bigger tires later.

ABS Controller plug, left side, next to the fire wall. Two plugs on top. Mounted on top of the hydraulic control unit. Don't remember which plug.

p. s. It's the larger of the two plugs, C1 - Pin 12; 20 AWG wht/org wire for the Vechicle Speed Sensor Signal. I cut it, slid some heat shrink over the wire and soldered the 3 wires together. BTW, I mounted mine in the ash tray. Good place if you're not using it. Also the instructions for setting it were within half a turn for right on. After we tweaked the setting, I gave up counting the mile markers in Washington state after 150 miles because it was always right on. Great unit.

JR2: My Truspeed is working great! I really like the fact that it has a toggle switch so you can dial in two different settings in case you have two sets of wheels/tires, or you can set one for new tires and the other for when they are getting low on tread if you want to be picky about your speed.

Thats great. Now all I have to do is get around to the gearing change on my truck (3. 54 to 4. 10) and get tires and I will be ready for the tru speed.

INSTALL COMPLETE.

It was a breeze. RADdodge is right. It's the wht/org wire at pin 12 on the left hand (if you are standing at the driver side of the truck) wire harness plug. Just solder it inline like the directions say, find a ground for the black wire and plug the red wire into the fuse box (I used the turn signal fuse).

I dialed it in following a friend's vehicle. I didn't try the mile marker method. I just can't see how that could be that accurate, but maybe it's possible.

As far as this box versus the Abbott unit, do a search on "Abbott" and you'll find a bunch of information. That's how I came to the Truspeed. I don't understand completely, but I believe that the Abbott will not work on All Wheel ABS trucks without being modified. There is plenty of info in the TDR archives on this subject. Just make sure you buy the right box for your application and good luck!

I think if you look at the cost of the Abbott and the Tru Speed you will find that the tru speed is much less $$.

Thanks for the report.

A word to the wise...

Just took my truck in last night to the dealer to fix a transfer case leak... They voided my warranty (surprise, surprise, I know  ). But what really surprised me was the first reason they gave me: the Truspeed module. Don't ask me why that would void the warranty. I wasn't really going to fight it though, because they also mentioned that it was "dumping too much fuel," whatever that means ;).

Just be careful. The dealers look for any reason to void the warranty. I think this has been pretty well hashed out here on the TDR, though.

Mine is probably gone to. . I just have not had it in to the dealer so they don't know what I have done.

Archer Dodge on the SW Freeway near Sugar Land...

BTW, it just occured to me what the problem is with the truspeed that makes them void the warranty (maybe I'm the last one :) ). The ability to control the speedometer is also the ability to control the odometer, if you follow me. You could theoretically slow down your odometer and milk the warranty period. I'm sure that is why the voided my warranty (aside from that whole fueling thing ;) )

I bought my truck at Archer, but it has always been serviced at Wiesner in Tomball. They have been very good to deal with. My speedometer was broken for a while or so due to a bad sensor in the rear end. Larger tires would also slow the odometer. It sounds like they were afraid of the Truspeed, but then again it could have been other stuff...

When I picked the truck up, I talked to the service people. They were telling me that they would have voided the warranty for the tires alone! I'm running 255/85R16 BFG Mud Terrains. I think that's a little out of line, but they make the calls. As you can imagine, I was less than pleased . . .

Bottom line is... and I think it's been pretty well documented on the TDR, if you bomb, the dealers will void the warranty. If your warranty means anything to you, don't modify the vehicle. Like I mentioned before, I didn't put up much of a fight about it because the simple fact is, I knew that they would probably void the warranty because of the injectors and all. I was expecting that. You do have to pay to play. Now, if they had voided my warranty and all I had done was tires and the Truspeed, I would be pretty ******...

Truespeed?

Just upgraded my '99 from 245's to 265's. Should I get a Truespeed? How much has this changed my readings on the speedo & odometer? Also, where are these available?

Thanks.

The tru speed is available from many vendors. I would try any of the big 4x4 shops on the net. I have seen it for around $170 at many places.

As for your need for it, maybe. I don't know if the 99's came with the option for 265-75 tires, if they did you may be able to get the dealer to reprogram the ECM for that size. Most people running the tru speed are running bigger than stock size tires.

There have been several post on the tru speed and tire sizes, try searching for tru speed.

Lordsman, the 265's are a standard tire size that the dealer can program your computer for. It would be cheapest to take it in and have your computer reset for the bigger tires.

If I recall a 10% increase in tire Diameter will require a calibration factor for a performance benifit (Along with not getting 80 tickets a year) I am just barely in the safe zone going from 235's to 255's

The reason I installed the Truspeed was just what ToolManTim said: tickets. My last two trucks were both lifted and had large tires. The speedometer didn't read accurately and you could never tell if you were within the law or not... I was absolutely not willing to have that situation on the new truck.

REMEMBER- If the dealer sees the Truspeed, your warranty is toast! You've been warned.

I've been thinking about it, but I've trained myself to look at my GPS on my dash and not at my speedo. I might have a hard time trying to retrain myself to look at my speedo along with my tach. :)

WoW

I don't think I'ld pay $170 for that. :(

The nice female State Trooper was nice enough to tell me mine is 8mph off. :) I was doing 70 and she said I was going 78. :eek: I just keep in mind that it's off a bit and keep my speed down. :D It's much cheaper, and as far as tickets go, only one in the 4 1/2 years I've owned the truck, and knowing the actual speed wouldn't have helped cause I wasn't worried about it. :p 88 in a 55 by the way, $150 dollars later and I learned my speeding lesson. :{
