Howdy Friends,

I guess full retirement has given me time to catch up on projects. This one has been deferred since 2010. In April 2010, I researched and ordered an AFE Stage 2 filter and intake system for my 2009 C&C. The AFE folks said it wouldn't fit a C&C, but I couldn't see why. In the meantime, I believe it might have been 2010 May Madness when I won a cool air adapter for the stock air box. I decided to install it and use up the 4 OE air filters I purchased from Genos garage. Well, guess what? I just completed use of the 4th air filter. So while installing oil bypass system and replacing the accessory belt on my C&C, thought I would install this. The installation is straight forward and everything fits, except I don't like the way the coolant tank hose fits with the AFE installed. I'm going to notch the AFE housing so the hose lays flatter. You can see the air cleaner on my Amsoil Bypass Filter installation post in this forum.

Anyway, the project was easy and looking forward to using it. I know there's a lot of controversy about oiled air filters, but I've always had great success with them in our dusty environment. Have an AFE on my 2003 2500 since 2003 with 202,000 miles and doesn't use a speck of oil. I'm pretty good at cleaning and oiling the filters.

I'll let y'all know if I see any benefits, other than no purchasing any more air filters.

See ya,

Ron

Well, with 198,000 miles with the AFE on my '03 2500 purchased new in 03, I've never had an issue: no codes, no oil film, nothing. I've cleaned/oiled the filter about 4 times. I have heard of folks over oiling them, but they are not following instructions. I know this is much debated and I respect your choice not to use them, but I get great results from oiled air filters.

BTW, before they came out with the fine prefilter, I used to put my wife's old panty hose over the filter. It worked.

Try an oiled filter od a newer Cummins for a while and report back.

IMHO a complete wast of $ on a newer truck to change the intake system.

Copy, I anticipate in the next ten years reporting the same positive results on my 3rd Gen 6.7L as I have on my 3rd Gen 5.9L and seeing the same results I've seen on all the gassers I've had great results from. I keep my vehicles a long time and from a straight-line cost analysis, my 03 5.9L AFE has paid for itself, never set a code, never replaced a sensor, and never had any observable particulate pass thru to the turbo or downstream. The common rail 5.9L common rail intake is pretty much the same as the 6.7L in front of the turbo. Now the big difference is behind the turbo on the 6.7L where we are mixing exhaust gases via EGR into the intake.
So, here we are: you don't use them and I do. I have satisfied to myself the benefits. Others are likely too, or there wouldn't be such an aftermarket demand. I run a Smarty too on level 5, and I use Amsoil 15W-40, and run a bypass oil filter, so that covers the controversial topics prevalent on this forum and many other Cummins forums as well. Going on another 5 to 6 week trip May-June timeframe, so I'll report back how my AFE is working on my 6.7L C&C. Have a good one.

I said I would be honest about this, so here I am with an update: I'm putting my modified OEM cold box back on with the 4" cool air duct running out of the bottom. This setup works way better than the AFE, especially with the mod. There is a definite seat of the pants feel. Anyone want to buy an AFE cold air box cheap? Have a good one y'all.

Ron
