Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Installed Direct reading Oil Pressure Gage, Suprise..

Installed a direct reading oil pressure Gage, from the plugged port on the

oil filter housing.



Surprise; OEM gage nowhere close to actual readings.



Cold startup ( 80 degrees, Fl ) 80 psi, oem gage a little over 40.



As oil temp warmed, pressure dropped to 70's, oem gage stayed little over 40



Also the OEM gage does not follow RPM, Direct reading gage changes

quite a bit with rpm. 30 idle to 65 psi when engine is hot... .





Does anyone have the oil PSI vallues to compare to, I want to make sure

the Direct reading gage is functioning correctly... .

my OEM follows what your direct read is showing. It sounds like your OEM may have had the "dumb oil pressure" update. Basically people were complaining about low oil pressure. DC said hogwash and put out an ECM update in which the OEM gauge shows pretty much 40psi all the time, regardless of pressure ( I think that it will drop to zero if there is acutally zero as a safety). If you have not had any ECM updates or it was not done at the factory (Not sure if they did that) then I would look at the oil pressure sender as possibly being bad.

I have a direct reading gauge and the OEM as well. Mine read exactely as you stated. The most interesting reading I find is the hot reading at idle after the engine is fully warmed up - 30 psi. I sure would not want to go much below that!

I like to play what if at times. What if the speedo went dead? You can drive safely and within the speed limits by adjusting your "go pedal" using the direct reading oil pressure. Try it sometime.

Thanks, I did notce that the pressure at idle is lower after the engine is shut down for a short length of time ( 30 minutes ) I think the oil is getting
hotter after shut, after the engine is started the psi at idle comes back up a little. Wonder if Heat soak continues warming oil after shut down????

I would think as long as you have atleast 20psi at idle, your ok.
