installed EGT probe today

Drilled and tapped the manifold and screwed in the fitting and had to turn it down quite a ways to get it to tighten up. The bottom of the fitting isn't flush with the manifold and sits about 1/4 below. Is this a big deal? Is there a heat treated type of plumber tape that would snug it up?

Thanks, Jeff

Plumber tape????

I not sure I want to use plumber tape even if it could stand the temperature. As I recall when you tighten pluber tape it tear and slits into the treats. If don't know it that soft tape would tear off damage the turbo, I doubt it but do not know.

Jeff... I don't pretend to be an expert on this, but everything I read, before doing mine, advised that the threads not extend into the exhaust gas, and the probe should not be more than 3/4 the way down in the manifold. Someone with more expertise will have to confirm if this is a problem, and what you might do to fix it... :)

What kind of EGT gauge?, you can use Anti Seize too, but not teflon tape, it wont hurt the turbo, it will just melt too fast. I have an Autometer, i used no tape, and it did not go in as far as you said.

I used anti-seize but that doesn't help snug the fitting up. If i left it flush it's sloppy and i'd have blow-by. I had to screw it down to tighten it up. I quess i could have the fitting cut and rethreaded so it wouldn't protude into the manifold. Wouldn't look forward to redoing this project. Still waiting for more replys. Thanks Jeff

Is it 1/8" or 1/4" NPT ? If it's 1/8", maybe re-tap to 1/4" and use a reducer bushing ? I know that's not what you want to hear, but it may be your only solution.

My EGT probe isn't as far as what you say yours is... but I have also had the problem of snugging my prob in place. Pretty much once a week, I have to pop the hood to make sure it tight. I kinda wish the ATS 3 piece manifolds still came drilled and tapped. .

IT's worth repeating the warning to fellas installing thermocouples, and tapping their exhaust manifolds, to NOT immediately run the tap clear to the end of it's threads - pipe threads are tapered - and depending upon the degree of taper on your specific thermocouple, you MIGHT be smart to tap part way, then check how deep the thermocouple will thread into what you have done - LOT'S easier to tap a bit DEEPER, than it is to put some of those threads BACK after you've gone too deep... ;) :D

The fitting is 1/4". I sure wish they would of said something in the instructions about threading the hole. Most of read 20 different instructions because i wanted to be completely some i didn't screw it up. I did tap the threads all the way down. I going to try maybe washers as spacers or cut the fitting so it a bit shallower. Thanks for the info Gary but it was a bit late.

If worst gome to worst

You might consider tapping it out to say3/8 pipe and then using a bushing to sleeve it to the correct size 1/4 inch.
