installed a set of dynomite diesel stage 2 90 hp nozzles last night

part #0406isbe90

install seemed fine, except for #4 being hard to get out ... thank goodness i borrowed the a puller

got it buttoned up ... truck fired up immediately ... idled good/normal

hit the throttle to pull out of the garage and the black smoke rolled, idle stumbled up and down and the truck shut down ...

took off the valve cover gave everything a visual check and it all looked good

disconnected the quadzilla in case it's some kind of map sensor fubar ...

started up again ... same as above

also adjusted the valves ... had to do exhaust so i just did 'em all

gonna go to bed ... any thoughts on what to trace down?

thanks

When I first installed my ddp90's they smoked at idle but then I drove it around the block and all the smoke cleared up.

The smoke was white and like a constant haze. Is that what you are experiencing?

ok white haze at idle

then black when you try to take off ... sounds / looks like a heavily fueled p-pumped truck

will run a little ways with the smoke rolling a little and then she shuts off and is hard to restart ...

let her sit 15 minutes and she'll fire right up

You're going to have to go through and check all your injectors for proper seating and check the tubes that go between injectors and injection lines.

My truck had this same problem when we put Dynomites injectors in. It ended up being that a tube was not seated right.

although my truck did not shut off after I had injectors installed, it did smoke pretty bad from all the oil that dripped in the cylinder... as well it was idleing like crap... I say start it and just lt it rum, dont try to drive until the idle smooths.

Sounds like classic misaligned or under-torqued connector tube to me as well. Easy enough to just give them a quick turn (tighten) and fire it up to see what happens.

Sooo, what exactly do we do with the "rum"?? Pour it in the tank or drink it? :p

I am thinking mixing rum and injectors is a recipe for black smoke. :-laf :-laf

I apologize, I am NO help and have no idea. :(

thanks guys ...

checked 4 of the connector tubes ... 3,4,5,6 ... 3 and 6 were finger tight?!!!?!!

used a mac tool inch lbs wrench and tightened to 132 INCH lbs ... .

thought that would do it ... started the truck ... no smoke idles good ... did my little "i love the tdr the world is good" dance and it started missing ... smoking and shut off

arrrrrggghhhh

got a couple of hours sleep and a couple of tdr friends coming over ...

that's what i get for pulling an all nighter ...

what about that part # guys ... 0406isbe90

is there any difference in the early '03s ... tips have brazil on them ... injectors and high pressure lines that came on the truck have japan written on them ... that's what i get for making fun of the duramax's :{

Did you look at the tips before installing them? The 03/04 tips have 8 holes and the 04. 5+ tips have only 5 holes.

BTW, The connector tube nuts need to be tighened to 37 ft-lbs ;) (not 132 in-lbs)

A good procedure is as follows:

-Install injector and make sure it "clicks" into place

-Tighten injector hold down bolts alternately to 44 in-lbs, then back them off

-Install connector tube and make sure it "clicks" into place

-Install and tighten connector tube nuts to 11 ft-lbs

-Tighten injector hold down bolts alternately to 89 in-lbs

-Tighten connector tube nuts to 37ft-lbs

This procedure makes sure that the connector tube and injector are lined up and making a good connection before final torque down. Hope you get her going soon, cause you will love the DDP injectors :D

the instructions printed on sag1's post in TDR issue 52 page 49 states "tighten the connector tube to 11 foot pounds"

that's it ... arggggg

then retighten to 37 ft/lbs thanks

Sorry about that, I kinda stoppped MID-thought.

Anyway, the truck idled rough and then finally started to clear up. John said it takes a few minutes for the cylinders to clear all the oil and junk out.

And he was right. 10 minutes later, all was good and fun

Oh Yeah!!!!

the only thing worse than screwing up is doing it in front of 20 thousand of your diesel buddies

registered surveyor ... registered nurse and still too stupid to read the final part of the instructions

must have been confused by all the pretty pictures :-laf

but i can change out a set of connector tubes with the best of them now!!!

the injectors are MUUUUUUUCH stronger than i thought they'd be

considerably stronger than the 140 quad box

power is instant ... turbo spool is instant

much quicker than my '01 was with the stock turbo

it's gonna be HARD on the stock 47RE :--)

one last question ;) (remember i'm the only guy in this part of the state with these mods so there is no one to compare with so bare with me)

these things smoke more than i thought they would ... a PLEASANT surprise

at idle in neutral i can nail it and they'll puff black and flip the boost gauge up to 2 psi ...

you can drive it with no smoke if you try ... but you really have to try

as long as this is normal we love these things Oo.

thanks for all the help ... you guys were right on the ball

When I'm running 100% #2 Diesel they puff a bit when I accelerate. If I really get on it I put out a bit of black smoke. With B99. 9, I don't get any smoke out of them ever.

My DDP 90 hp injectors took off . 68 seconds on my truck in the quarter. . At the time, from a 14. 50 to a 13. 82. . I am very happy with mine as well. .

thanks for all the help guys ...

drove it all day ...

whew boy!

smokier than i expected (and lovin' it) but awesome power ...

throttle response and turbo boost are INSTANT

once again, as long as the smoke is normal we couldn't be happier

the smoke is different than my '01 ... no smoke at all at start up ... no smoke or change at idle ... sounds exactly the same, looks exactly the same at the tailpipe

but if you stomp it in neutral it puffs a nice little black cloud ... sweet
