I had a bad drone with the Banks exhaust system on my 03. Thanks to the advice on this forum, I had a MBRP muffler installed today at DPS (diesel performance shop) in Van Nuys. I talked with the owner John Hamlin a couple of weeks ago, and called him on Sat. Fortunately, he had a muffler in stock and was able to install it this morning. It took a little over an hour. He could have had it done in about 15 minutes, but took the time to remove the pipe without cutting it, in case I needed to use it again. He said if it doesn't work, bring it back and he will try somthing else. Can't be a guarantee like that.
He installed it just upsteam the Banks muffler so I now have 2.
So far so good. It sounds great. Still has a nice throaty sound but not as loud. I towed a small trailer (3k lbs) over the gravevine with a decent headwind so I ran in drive (3rd) several times.
There still is a mild drone, but only about 100 rpm between 2000 and 2100. It is not nearly as bad as the Banks muffler by itself and is easy to pass the rpm range. At 2100+ it is quiet. I will get a better result on Fri. as I will be carrying my 5k lb Lance and towing the trailer with bikes. Should be around 17k or 18k gcvw.
I plan on replacing the AFE intake system with the stock box and put the silencer ring back in to make it even more quiet. I don't plan to add a fueling box and think the stock box will flow plenty of air.
