Installing a EGT probe in a 6.7 CTD Exhaust Manifold

I recently traded my Ram 2500 5. 9 CTD for a 08 Ram 3500 6. 7 CTD. I installed an EGT probe in the exhaust maifold of the 5. 9 CTD however I dropped the turbo in order to verify what I would be drilling into, such as a casting rib or other obstacle. I installed the probe in the center of the exhaust manifold approx 2 inches above the exhaust manifold/turbo flange.



Now I'm ready to install the EGT probe on my 6. 7 CTD however, the thought of dropping the turbo is not a very appealing prospect. I'm assuming that the 6. 7 exhaust manifold has been recast but to what degree I have no clue. I plan to drill the hole with the engine idling to prevent cuttings from dropping into the turbo. The question is where to drill the hole?



For those of you who have installed a pre turbo EGT probe in your 6. 7 CTD I would appreciate your feedback as to the location you chose to install the probe.

There is no internal web cast in the center of these manifolds like the older trucks have. I put the probe in the center of the manifold a bit up from the turbo flange between the flange and where the manifold bends towards the engine. Personally I feel that there is no need to have the engine running if you take your time and grease your drill bit and keep the cutting tap oiled and wipe it off often. A small pneumatic right angled drill will be your best friend when doing this job. :cool:

We base our recommendations on "ease of access" locations. The 6. 7L engines are tightly packed into the engine compartment, but you can access the exhaust manifold by removing a cover. Look for a convenient location, and install there.



There is a lot of debate regarding how to keep the "chunks" of manifold from falling inside and destroying the turbo. Your comfort level will determine the method you choose. As you begin to drill, notice the size of the pieces falling away from the drilled area... VERY tiny. If one falls into the manifold, it will blow, harmlessly, past the turbo on initial start-up, causing no damage. For a measure of comfort, keep in mind that the manifold is cast iron and, therefore, magnetic. A small mechanics magnet will retrieve any shavings from the inside of the manifold. Personally, I drill, tap, install the probe, and drive away. I've only installed on my personal vehicles, and have never experienced a problem due to my installation method.

That's how I did mine also on my 5. 9. Cast doesn't make big chips when you drill it. Kinda like a powder substance.
