Installing Aux. Fuel Tank?????

I recently bought a used Aux. Fuel Tank and I will be installing it in the next couple of days however I have a couple of questions. Comming out of the top of the tank I have 3 lines, one is the vent line, one I would guess is the supply line to be hooked to the aux. pump, and the third I am guessing is the return line. The question I have is hooking up the supply and return lines. My truck currently has a nipple in the fuel fill neck from an old tank, but where do I hook the return line into and should I stay with the fill neck or hook the supply line in at a different location???????

We might need some more info about your setup to help you out. I'm making a couple of assumptions here:

1. Your aux tank is an in-bed type and has it's own fill neck.

2. The aux tank feeds the stock tank via an aux pump that fills the stock tank until it is full.

3. The aux pump runs when the key is in the on position.



Are these correct?

Spooled-up, Thanks for the reply, I would like to answer your questions however I do not know if I can. When I bought the tank it was from a third party and was used. I was told to go to napa and get an aftermarket aux. fuel pump, and run the supply line into the fill neck, then run a switch up into the cab to work the pump. Thats okay I guess but what is the 3rd hose for???? And yes the tank has its own fill neck.



The way you described in your reply seems like the correct way to install it. By chance can you walk me through installing it and tell me where to get the aux. pump you are talking about.

I just finished mounting my aux tank and this is how I did mine. I bought the vent kit form spooled up. I installed that in my oem tank and plumbed the aux tank into the factory vent line. I also put a shut off valve in the bed of the truck and a 2 mic filter under the bed to filter the fuel being transferd. Now when I buy fuel I always put it in the aux tank so it passes through the 2 mic filter. Works for me.

I am not exactly sure about what to get for an aux pump from NAPA. I would guess that it would be mounted on the floor beside the tank in the bed. You would run your line from the tank to the pump, and then from the pump to the existing nipple in your fill neck. If the aux pump has a port for a return line, you would plumb that into your third hole on the aux tank. When the pump could no longer fill your stock tank, fuel would be returned to your aux tank in case you left the switch on by mistake. The third hole in the top of the aux tank should be a vent line. There has to be a way for air to enter the tank to equalize pressure as the fuel is drawn out of the tank.



1 line should be the pickup line to your aux fuel pump

1 line should be the return line from your aux pump when the stock tank is full

1 line should be the vent for the tank.



Is there any way to see into the tank to determine which one has the pickup that reaches the bottom of the tank?



Are any of the ports on the top of the aux tank labeled with a letter or anything else?



All of the above is just a guess on my part and may be wrong based on what you have.

Do you know where I can buy a Aux. Fuel Pump for this type of tank??? I did check and they are maked Supply, Return, & Vent. NAPA is clueless on this one. Thanks

I did some searching on the net for a simple 12 volt fuel pump. I didn't really find one that would work for your situation that had a return line. Holley makes some simple fuel pumps, but I'm not sure they have a bypass in the pump itself either.



Holley's instrucions for the Red fuel pumps have a phone number you can call for tech questions. It's 1-866-GOHOLLEY or 1-

270-781-9741. I'd call them and ask if their pumps are compatible with diesel fuel and if they have a port for a return line or if you need a pressure regulator to mount downline of your pump. These are the least expensive pumps I found in my search at just under $100 from Summit Racing. Most of the other pumps I found were $150 plus.

Here's another link to Glacier Diesel Power. They have a Walbro pump that might work. It'd be worth a call to them to see if it might work. Looks like they require a bypass regulation system for the return line in your tank.
