going to buy pyro guage and tach soon. my question is - when you drill in for the pyro probe, do you have to remove this piece from the engine, as pieces of metal will undoubtedly fall inside, thus being drawn into the turbo. Thanks for advice in advance.

Most of the people remove the turbo.

For the ones that don't. We drill the hole and tap with a shop vac running with the hose end right against the drill bit/tap. We also coat the tap with grease to hold the shavings. Then we use a long magnetic pickup to remove the shavings from inside the housing.

Hey Dean,

You don't have to remove anything from the truck to drill and tap the manifold if you don't want to. Many have drilled and taped using grease on the outside of the bits to catch most of the chips and then used a machanics magnet to remove any large chips inside the manifold and housing. The smaller chips will pass through the turbine and into the exhaust pipe.

Now that being said I removed the turbo to drill mine. I was leary of not getting all the pieces out and causing damage. It takes only a few minutes to remove the turbo anyway and it makes it easier to get the thread and probe depth set properly with the turbo off.

If you do take the turbo off you may have to replace the oil drain gasket so keep that in mind.

thanks phillip and jbolt. thats why I love this website. There is not much on these trucks that someone has not already done! Thanks again.

So long as you are reasonably careful with your measurements for the placement of the hole, you won't have any problems drilling in place.

A heavy coat of grease a moderate drill speed so you don't turn the grease into thin oil from heat and you're good to go... .

Pull the drill bit a few times as you drill, re-coat with grease (and vacuum running) is all you need to do.

You do the tapping the same way, grease it up and so on.....

Seen plenty done that way, and never a problem.

The one thing to do when you tap it is, to pull the tap after a few turns, and try the thermocouple in the hole,... it should turn in about 3-4 full turns then snug up, and that is plenty. Remember, it's a tapered hole so don't go too far with the tapping...

When you first start up the truck, just let it catch and idle for a few seconds, after that it's all good...
