2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission instrument cluster self-diagnostic test

Page 8E-13 of the 98 service manual describes the above test. At item (6) it describes the "walking segment test". On my truck, the test goes straight from "all of the segments will be illuminated at once" to item (8), the gauge activator test. The individual segment test and bulb tests are omitted. Is this normal? For those without a manual, the test is 1. Ignition switch off. 2. Hold down odometer reset button. 3 . Ignition on, but do not start engine. 4. Hold odometer reset button down for about 10 seconds until CHEC appears in the odometer display. 5. Remove finger from odometer reset button. 6. Watch the pretty display! Nick.
