I have a 1998 12 Valve with a 5 speed manual transmission.

When I turn the key on the all the lights come on the is an up-shift arrow in the middle of the tach. The light lights up for a couple of seconds and that is it.

It seems to me that the light should light up when it is time to shift. How do I get the light to work during shifting.

I have seen these on Gas models but I have not seen them on diesel's. It is there to save gas! Would be neat on a diesel though.

well, if it is an option, I have every available one, minus beer window, auto and 4x4, and mine does not work either... how do you get it to work??? there has to be a way.

It's called the Upshift Indicator Lamp option, manual trans only. I've tried to trace down the wiring for it before, you end up going though several pages in the service manual. If I recall it correctly a ground signal from the PCM goes to the upshift lamp module which has a relay/ timer. It also receives a signal from your trans when you are in OD since you can't upshift anymore. The light only stays for five seconds when it's time to shift. I know the wiring is all there, probably the option only involves the module. On my trucks the light doesn't ever come on even during the bulb check portion of the start cycle, only reason I knew it was there was from seeing it though the back of a removed dash.

On every rig I've driven with an upshift light I've found it annoying especially on winding mountain roads were you are running the rpms up on the straights but not upshifting because of the next curve.

I know when to shift better than the computer.

illflem,

That does make sense on the light being an annoiance, but I hate it when things dont work.

I will try to get it to work and it i dont like the light then I will unplug it.

I had a upshift light in my 96 1500 with a the 318 and 5 spd. As far as I know they only came on gas engines in the 1500 series. They were supposed to help with mileage a little. The front air dam is standard on the 1500 series. While neither of these would result in a substantial increase in fuel economy alone, every

little bit can help.

The 1500 series and a few of the early 2500 series (in 94 and maybe 95 they did make a LD & HD version of the 2500 series) are the only ones which count towards the CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy). However any trucks over 8500 don't count towards the CAFE. Because they could save some money, is probably the main reason that DC does not make the front air dam standard on the 2500 and 3500 series, and eliminated the front axle disconnect on 4wd 2500 & 3500 series trucks starting on with all trucks manufactured after January 1, 2002.
