I may be going to look at a 2004 CTD at a dealer in Phoenix sunday as the wife wants a diesel P/U.

One under hood pic shows the intake elbow near the block almost looks like it caught fire?

Could that have been the pre-heater got stuck on etc or ??

Any input would be great. thanks.

When I bought my 03 ( it had a dead engine ) the intake looked like this:

\\<a href="http://s447.photobucket.com/albums/qq195/shadrach1984/03%20CTD%20Rebuild/?action=view&amp;current=DSCN0139.jpg" target="_blank">#ad
</a>

One of the grid heater solenoids beside the pass side battery was burnt. I replaced both of them and also the damaged cable. The grid heater itself isn't usually a problem, although it can go. For the solenoids I used 2 of Cummins p/n 3916301 - same ones used on 1st gens - they are slightly different in looks than the original ones but work fine and are a heck of a lot cheaper than buying the assembly from Dodge. Sounds like the grid heater may have failed on.

If your interested in the truck have them pull the horn and see what the heater/intake looks like.

As long as there are no dtc's it should be fine,to be on the safe side they could actuate it with the appropriate scan tool. That would check the functionality better than a visual and be quicker as well

Yeah, chances are it failed and was replaced but the evidence is still there. I would just want to take a look and ensure there was no residual damage. . Thou it is unlikely as its all metal around there.
