Why would truck run hotter???

Engine starts out rough, but clears right up?

I'm thinking I need to upgrade both my intake and exhaust manifold. I tow often, varying weights, from a snowmobile 2-place trailer, to a 30' fifth-wheel trailer. The last two times I towed the large trailer, I had overheating issues during steep upgrades. I have removed the cat and muffler, hoping to alleviate any problems there. Next on my list is the intake (it's currently stock) so any brand suggestions are welcome. Then possibly the exhaust manifold. Thanks ahead of time!

If you're overheating coolant, why are you worried about intake and exhaust manifolds? It sounds like something has changed since this problem only came up during your last two trips. So, I'd concentrate on what might have changed. Is the fan clutch working? The thermostat? Is the radiator clean (not just the part you can see)? Has the cooling system been flushed and the coolant changed? I must be missing something here - I tow a 19,000 lb GVWR 5th wheel in Texas summer weather up 6% and higher grades and don't have overheating problems with a totally stock truck.

Right? I feel like I worry about everything. The thermostat was changed, shortly thereafter a coolant flush was done. The water pump was changed as well with it a full coolant flush again. Come to think of it, the water pump was changed after the overheating problems. I haven't towed the trailer yet this year. I'm having it double checked that the fan clutch is in fact working properly. Guess I have a great excuse to pull the trailer out and test the cooling system once I know the fan clutch is okay. Thanks for putting things in order for me! Being new and trying not to screw things up in the process of learning is a challenge!

Just so we have a reference, what do you consider hot, what numbers? What level do you run the Juice on when you tow, have you changed it to a lower setting to see what happens?

What RPM do you tow at? Do you drop a gear to bring up the Revs? Unless you have extreme weight issue a stock truck show handle it.

the stock intake is better than aftermarket and will not cause your problem, nicsaac brought my attention to the edge juice, it has ruined many engines in trucks that tow, the peak cylinder temp gets so high it crystallizes the piston top and the top ring breaks especially on the #6 piston, throw it in the trash and get efi live by anarchy or a smarty jr

Do you see any white smoke out of the exhaust? I'm concerned about a cracked cylinder wall. That happened to me on my F250 gasser before I purchased my first Dodge/Cummins in 1995.
