Hey Group!

I’ve been reading the experiences, wisdom, and mistakes of the TDR conglomerate for a several years now and have come to admire the diversity, from the Mfr. people, to the commoner, to the pure negative pessimist. I know not everyone will agree, but each has a valuable place here.

OK, enough of the BS!

I am getting really close to doing a little bombing on my 0-4. 5 Dually. I’ve done a lot of box research, considered exhaust alternatives, and my only real area of unknown is the intake side. I’ve looked at the research on filters. Great stuff and really leaves only a couple choices for the thinking man. But… What’s the story on the “Torque Tube” as it’s been coined? I see some simple replacements, some replacements with new couplings, and some fancy molded components for the big $$$.

OK again. I’m from an engineering background. I know damn well that 90% of the benefit comes from 10% of the cost and that the last 10% of the benefit requires 90% of the cost. (That really cuts into my Red Wine budget!) Looking at the pure “bang-for-the-buck”, beyond a good AFE or equivalent filter, what’s to be gained in spending lots more bucks for one of the “improved” intake pipes? Stage 2?

It occurs to me that reducing the flow restriction is important, but could be easily overcome by placing a really big funnel on the front of the truck. So, short of a bunch of bodywork, do I need to worry about the “tube” or is it giving me the benefits of a chrome fuel door?

ah, I forgot what the question was?

Great! not that the BS is over quickly...

Do I need an expensive torque tube or can I get by with a piece of 4" irrigation pipe?

best bang for buck i think is a BHAF and home made torque tube...

if you just want to change out the muffled section before the turbo, you need a piece of pipe that is 5. 5"OD and you are set... one step better is to change out the rubber elbows with ones that are 4" both sides and then a piece of 4" pipe. . that removes the expansion chamber effect. .
