Intercooler Connector Hoses

I was under the truck checking the connector hoses for the intercooler and the also making sure the clamps were tight. I found that the hoses are soft and balloned out, like they have been stretched out of shape. Are they suppose to be nicely formed like the upper connectors? If they are supposed to be nicely formed instead of being stretched out of shape, could there be a power lose??? I didn't find any holes or loose spots in the clamps, but I was wondering about the shape of the hoses?
Got any ideas!!!!

Swelled hoses indicates failure of internal reinforcment. If these are truly swelled then they mail fail totally at any time. If they are not leaking now then no degradation in performance should be noticed. If they do fail you will notice a great loss of power. It should still run well enough to get to a repair facility though #ad

If you are referring to the real short hoses, this is normal. This is the only way to allow for engine movement using a short hose.

Yes I am refering to the rubber connectors on the intercooler, but the condition of them do not look like the ones closer to the top of the engine. The ones that are close to the top of the engine have a wire band around the middle, but the ones on the bottom do not have this wire. Also the rubber is soft and has a ballooned look. . (stretched out of shape).

Mine are like that. Kind of look like baggy knees in an old pair of pants. So far no problem. The clamps are tight and the hoses seem to be in good shape. Just don't look very good.

That is the best that I have heard it described of what they look like. But are they suppose to look like that? I don't want them to let go when I am in need of the power. . Thanks Joe!!!!!

My 2001 has the balloons. Unless they go out the first time you start the truck up, I believe that they are suppose to look like that. Again, I believe that it is to accommodate engine movement.

The more that I think about it, that sounds logical. That with a stiff boot, the engine shake might tear something loose. Thanks guys!!! I think when I get a chance and the extra green, I will get a set of both lower and uppers and put them in the 5th wheel just incase they let go when I am towing the trailer. .

Rick,a roll of duct tape will get you down the road if a hose does fail. My hoses have had the baggy knee look for five years no problem even with 40 psi boost.

Another thing that is a good thing to have along is a roll of the black tape that is for leaks in a radiator hose. That stuff works!! I had a leak and after it cooled off (stuck in Laytonville again!)I got a roll of that stuff from the Chevron station. It didn't leak all the way from there to Sacramento. Not a drop! It would probably work with these intercooler hoses. It's cheap too!

Rick - Seems pretty extreme to buy new hose set without checking into what the new ones look like. Maybe a visit to a dealer for a peek under the hood of a new one or see the parts person before buying.

BTW - I always carry the 100mph duck tape, a roll of electrical tape and bailing wire - Ya never know when you will run into a nice Pherd driver that needs help #ad

When I first bought my used 97', there were two screw clamps holding the rubber hose closest to the turbo. The stock clamp was there though? I took the hose clamps off and put the stock in place and tightened. Right off, the hose blew off. Ended up reversing the metal pipe next in line towards the intercooler. Took some adjusting but it has held together since. I feel I could use just a little more hose length in that area.

Bailing wire is an essential part of every tool box. I once used 15 strands of it to replace a totally corroded battery cable that gave out in the middle of nowhere.

Rick,check the prices on those hoses also,I have a feeling you may be in for a suprise.
