Intercooler group purchase

Guys,

I know alot of the early first gen trucks are looking for/needing intercoolers. I've had a Banks intercooler on my truck for about 6 years now and love it. If some of you are interested please contact me for information as I think I can help several of you with purchasing one of the fine units. Also you need to keep in mind if you want to keep/modify your stock grille (like i did on Ol' Blue) or buy the Banks aftermarket grille.

Hi Don.

About what would one cost through the group purchase? Banks' asking price of $800 for an already intercooled '93 is pretty steep.

1985 DODGE 1 ton Crew Cab(imported from California with no rust) W/8' box converted to 4X4(wasn't that hard to do!) in 1999,converted to a 1991 Cummins Turbo diesel & 5 speed Getrag in 2000(wife can't drive a stick . 4:10 gears, limited slip rear end, 205 transfer case, 16" Goodyear GSA Wranglers and LE Package and a Sony CD Stereo. I have a Banks power pak on my truck that was already installed when I bought it. Is there an easy way to see if the intercooler is a stock unit or a Banks unit? Thanks

Hi PACCOOL.

The Banks unit is cad plated so it appears dull silver-unless it has been painted by the installer. The stock unit is black and the size of a very small car radiator.

If you can beat the price I was quoted, I may be interested in purchasing one more for my other truck. I ordered one last Thursday, I should be seeing it at my door any day now. I'm also interested in the grille modification you did to Old Blue. It seems like I will have to cut a lot of plastic in order to fit the Banks I/C between the A/C condenser and the plastic grille. I don't like the cheesy chrome grille Banks sells, and in my opinion, I think the 89 and 90 model Rams had the nicest looking grilles.

Does anyone know if the stock grill from a '91-'93 will bolt right on to a '89-'90?

No; it will not. You have to cut clearnce holes for the parking lights, relocate the headlights, and add mounting tabs. But the effect is worth it.

It sounds like if you have an 89 or 90 model year, you will have to modify your grille in order to install an intercooler. You can either purchase the cheap looking chrome tube grille that Banks sells (easiest fix) or modify your existing 89-90 grille like Big Don did, or purchase a post 91 model grille and modify your radiator support like jsimpson did in order for it to fit properly. Personally, I think I'm going to try the grille modification Big Don did on Old Blue. I like the square look of the 89-90 model year grills.
