How efficient is the stock 1st gen intercooler ?

At what power level is something better needed ?



Im in the middle of a Cummins conversion in a 96 chevy 1 ton and I was planning to use a powerstroke cooler but just to see I put up the stock 1st gen and the fit is amazing in my truck. It will require minimal fabrication to make fit.

So the $64 question is how do these work out ? Will it be enough to support 400 hp ? And Will I have to drive by watching the pyro when towing. I guess really what Im asking is how much cooler will it run with the ford cooler. I know there are a few here running them in thier dodges.

I tow about 12k ponnds and I live in the mountains. Sometimes in the summer months Im pulling good grades in 100 degree weather.

Lets have it 1st gen gurus.
 
BGilbert is running 450hp to the wheels in his "wastegated" 1st Gen intercooler. There are better and more efficient coolers out there; it's just a matter of what you want to spend. I'd think you'd be ok, and not have to babysit the pyro until you got going up a 6% grade in 100deg weather, but then it's good to babysit the pyro in that situation no matter what cooling you have for your EGTs.



If the cost were similar, and the PSD intercooler would fit with little or no more modifications, then I'd go that route.
