Looking for advice on installing intercooler on my stock '90. Whats available and approx cost? Is it worth the effort? Ready to retire and start dragging that old Wilderness fiver around. Thaught maybe that might help the heating problem.

Rockcrusher,

Look into swapping the radiator from the 91 to 93 trucks. Costs about $750, but I live here in Tucson, and now I never get above 190 even with the a\c on and pulling. I was very satisified. There is an article in one of the old TDRs about what you need.

I have the Banks intercooler on my early '91 - seems to work well, along with Banks Stinger exhaust system - I retained my original turbo housing, and obtain nearly 20 lbs. boost on grades pulling an 8,000 lb. 5th wheel.

I was having some overheating problems on those grades, but discovered that the radiator inlet and outlet are on the same side of the radiator, creating a "short cycling" effect where the coolent doesn't properly use the whole radiator surface effectively - so I had a radiator shop install a diversion baffle in the top tank of the radiator to more evenly distribute coolent flow across the WHOLE radiator, and have had no further problems - it was much easier than moving the radiator inlet to the opposite side, as some owners have done...

Banks Stinger exhaust, intercooler...

Thanks for the input. I have been thinking of doing that. I even bought the 93'inlet for the head so I could have the radiator inlet moved over.

Thanks for the info. Isee you have the same weird setup as mine with the 3. 07 axel. The 747 tran has been very good so far with 216,000 miles. Would like to put in a 3. 54 if I could find a good used one. Nothing stays here in the junk yards very long. axel

Rockcrusher,

Yes, I have the same wierd setup. I wish that I could go faster on the freeway, but with no overdrive, I tend to go pretty slow. I haven't had any problem with the trans though. I have a 1990 radiator that has been converted to the inlet on the other side for sale. I just spent $40 to have it rodded out before I switched it to the 1993 style. I would be happy to get $40 for it, plus shipping.
