I have been trying to find a source of cool air for underhood without cutting big hole in firewall. I decided to find out what temps I was dealing with first. I attached a temp probe to the airfilter ,(BHAF) about 1/2 way up the side and to the firewall end on the side about 12 - 14 inches from the turbo housing. I have had it in about a week and with out side temps anywhere from 40-70 degrees the under hood temps have stayed around 10 deg hotter than out side as long as there was air flow from truck movement. This was done with out a fan as it has been removed. IT has been as high as 15 deg higher and as low as 6 deg higher than outside temps. A hard full throttle run to 100mph made no difference in readings. A 100 mile trip on interstates nonstop made no difference. Havnt towed anything and prolly wont for a while.

I think underhood temps at least in the winter are not a problem.

I took my stock air horn (rubber thingy going under the fender) off two summers ago. I saw the temps increase 100 degrees. This was in the summer time. I put it back on since it took forever to cool down the turbo. Winter time is no problem, summer it $ucks.....

Yes they are, maybe not at 40°- 70° but at 0°- 32° they are too cold! I've been trying to keep my intake temp between 50-90° the ideal range for a diesel measured with an intake temp gauge, with little luck in very cold weather. Fanless and front blocked will sometimes yield only 30° at the intake while moving. I've been moving around the probe of a recording thermograph for the past 2 weeks, cool device I borrowed from the researchers at work, at zero there is no place under the hood over 32° except right on top of the engine when moving. This is fanless and front blocked. I've noticed recently that most of the large diesel engine generators here in the north have the filter intake mounted right on top of the engine behind the radiator, presumably to warm the intake air. Thinking of building a shield over the turbo to direct hot air into the air filter, much like a gasser does for warm-up. How's that for going against the standard way of thinking?

Deezul, I've been yanking the psychotty filter every Oct - May ever since I got it. I use the stock box with the horn removed and the wheelwell hole duct taped over. Don't try this in Texas!

illflem

Boy isnt that the truth, I bet my temp research will show a huge change come june. I need a Pscychotty setup for my hat come summer.
