Good for you. I replaced the brake switch some time back as well when cruise wouldn't work = light would come on but cruise wouldn't hold. Ended up being cruise module the rubber diaphragm rotted.

Almost guaranteed if you pull up on the brake pedal when it's at rest, you'll pooch the brake switch. For me, that usually results in the brake lights staying on. I've opened the switch on my '98 12V a bunch of times now and gently bent the tabs a little, then partially squeezed the post in to be sure the tabs go where they're supposed to go, and closed it up and reinstalled.

I know one contact is normally closed; this one is in the circuit that powers the CC vacuum device. The second contact is the truck's brake lights. I haven't looked in my SM to see what the third contact does; it might be for the trailer plug.
