It's back, at lower rpms while moving I can hear tapping noise coming from the engine area and only at 1500 to 1800rpm. At a standstill I can rev the engine to any rpm and can't hear a thing wrong. I took it to the dealer and dragged the diesel tech out kicking and screaming for a test drive so I could prove to him there was indeed a strange noise. He agreed there was, but didn't have a clue what it might be. Truck spent the day at the dealer and the mystery noise is still that. I think it's in the pump but why can't I duplicate the noise unless the truck is moving? strange.

Check your transmission tower. Pull the boot and use a mechanics stethascope. I found mine was the gear shift rattling. But sounded like a valve tick!

Before thinking it is the engine, jump or push the front bumper up and down so the front end cycles. Check the outer sway bar ends for a loose link. Mine had one loose on the driver's side. Drove me nuts as I was wondering what was going to break, until I had found the cause.
