My mom's 2001 truck is having starting problems, it will start fine a bunch of times then it wont even click. She took it to the Dodge dealer and they said to drive it until it dies then have it towed in! That is crazy. She moves the shifter from Park to Drive a bunch of times trying to start it and finally it will start. I thought it may be the neutral start switch on the auto transmission, but it didn't help when the transmission shop replaced it. They want to replace the starter next but that doesn't seem like a starter since it starts fine 8 out of 10 times. Anyone have an idea?

I'm 1500 miles away so I can't actually test things myself.

next time it does this hit it with a hammer lightly. sometimes the solenoid is stuck. if that fixes it get the repair kit with new brushes and plunger for the solenoid. Larry B has the parts. go to search and type in starter contacts. Someone may chime in with the link . Hope this helps.

It very well could be the started , that is a common symptom .
To tell for sure requires testing , a test light on the small wire at solenoid , if it lites & starter does not then you know its the starter , if it does not lite , it could be the ing. sw.
The up grade is a good idea for old & new starters .
