My 2003 has 224,000 miles. Maybe one out of ten times I turn the key to start, all I get is a loud noisy whine like an electric motor trying to run, but the starter doesn't engage to turn the engine over. Then, if I turn off the key and try again, the starter will generally fire off and it starts right up. I called the Dodge Dealer and they said the starter rarely goes out and they cost over $1000 just for the part! They suggested it might be the ignition switch or a loose wire. So far I haven't gotten stranded, but I'm afraid it is just a matter of time.
Any ideas?

Sounds like the starter drive is going bad. The best parts available ( as far as I'm concerned) are from Larry Bs. Google it or look for his ad in TDR Mag. He also has complete starters. You'll be pleasantly surprised at the price compared to what the dealer quoted you.

As stated above the bendix is not engaging. Could be just needs some lube in there, could just need a new starter.

No way a starter can cost 1K. Go to a parts house and see. I bet it will not be over $225 or so.

224k miles...once I determined without doubt it was the starter, I would just bite the bullet and replace with a new one, wouldn't try individual starter parts at this point, but that's just me.
