I've been getting some white smoke from my 2005 2500 CTD now for some time. Here is a list of symptoms and what has been done:

Intermittent white smoke on moderate acceleration and under load like going up hill. When I say intermittent, the smoke is pretty constant for a while, then the next day may not smoke at all. This isn't the usual balck smoke/soot that it has puffed out since new under full throttle type events.

Changed fuel filter (no water found in filter)

Changed oil/oil filter and air filter (oil level ok before change)

Checked out by dealer and flashed with latest software (resolved cold start up issues, but didn't change smoke when warm)

Changed service station where I buy my fuel and stopped using fuel additives. New source of fuel is a brand new place that opened in the last month.

So any ideas??? What tests should the dealer perform? My local dealer is friendly, but probably not world class when it comes to CTD's. FYI, my truck has 31k miles and is stock except for a turbo back exhaust system and opened up factory air intake system with Amsoil air filter.

If you still have your cat, the exhaust will look like a gasser when it is cold out. I have the cold start-up white smoke if I haven't plugged in.

If this is happening warm it sounds like it could be an FCA or possibly timing problem. The white smoke is generally way late injection timing when the engine has been run for a bit.

The dealer should be able to hook their scan tool and watch parameters as you test drive and try to repro the problem. If the tech knows how to operate and read the data stream it will give them a good idea where to start looking for problems.

Good luck. :)

The smoke issue is now mostly when warm/full operating temp, not on cold starts. Before the latest flash, I did have a miss and white smoke on cold starts.

One thing that I left out of my original description is the RokTek CPS, though that is supposed to advance the timing, not retard it...

Could this be an injector not completely sealing off after the power stroke of the piston causing raw fuel to go into exhaust? bg

I was thinking something like a injector dribbling myself... what would the dealer do to diagnois this type of issue? I'm going to have to prode and push the dealer to do anything else at this point and need some ideas to suggest to them.

Just for the heck of it check your transfer tubes. I had an intermiitent white smoke problem for a while. One day while working on things, I noticed my transfer tubes were just a little bit loose. Tightened them and I have not had white smoke since.

Could also be LP looking for place to go TU. :(

Like I said before, if you can repro it get the tech to hook up their mobile scanner and ride along so he can get some data. Otherwise its just a guessing game. :)
