I drove with a 4" open exhaust for quite a while, but the drone was driving my scribbles. I started a muffler search, and decided that a big-rig muffler would be easier to aquire than some others. But, most of the truck mufflers were 5" (in stock), so I thought, "what the heck"! I bought one of those big up-right semi mufflers and mounted it under the truck. I figured, if it will flow enough for a 14 liter motor, it oughta do fine with a 5. 9! I did a super-simple deal under there by just hanging on a 90' elbow on the back and dumping the exhaust under the bed. It was quiet enough for me and the exhaust temps didnt change one bit. Well, this past weekend I finished plumbing up my 5" single stack, and let me tell you, it is more quiet in the cab than stock (I think), yet very "truck sounding" outside. Besides looking cool, I am extrememly happy with this set-up... . now I just need more smoke!:D

I sort of know what you mean. I was running for a few thousand miles with my 4" exiting under the bed. I finally put a tailpipe on this weekend. Wow  I can't believe how quiet the truck is now ;)

Serioulsy, I can't even tell I have a 4" performance exhaust on my truck. Sounds stock in the cab now. I almost kind miss the rumble I had with the exit under the bed. It never really bothered me, but I do find highway driving a little nicer now.

muffling

i put together my own system, using a 4" straight thru truck muffler. i, also, couldn't take straight pipe noise and drone. nothing but smiles now. deep throaty tone, but volume no louder that oem. sounds much better, though. btw, truck mufflers are available on line from www.usatruckpartsonline.com. they have both 4" and 5". :)
