I just finished installing this 89 5.9
need to put antifreeze in the cooling system
it is completely empty
am using the factory truck radiator

How much to get the proper ratio

Thanks

It a 68 Satellite> drag car

almost finished
using some of the 89 truck wire harness in the 68 Satellite

The way I do this is put in a gal of AF and a gal of water. Then pour half of the second AF jug into the first empty one. Then top off each with a 1/2 gal of water. Add them as required, if you need more pre mix more at 50/50. You will end up with the correct 50/50 in the end. Snoking

Nice! I like the stack coming out of the cowl, looks like a sled puller:)

Just an FYI, since the conversion is in a drag car you are probably not using the heater so I would still use a heater hose from the head to the water intake elbow at the bottom of the block. The water pumps are powerful even at 2500 rpm. You are probably going to be north of 4k. On the right front corner, the head gasket printed seal is really narrow and prone to leak with high pressure/rpm. The heater is the normal bypass.

Keep us in the loop when you start making passes!

Are you aware that the factory radiators was built with flaw? The top port to the block is directly above the return line on the bottom and does not cool the liquid as it should. Reason for the change a couple years later. Here in Salt Lake city we have a radiator shop that changed the top hose to the other side of the radiator and this solved the over heat problem that was inherent with these models. The coolant does not circulated though the core. You might check this out.

MLee

got it gunning
checked the rad.

wow, not even half of the radiator was warm,
the drivers upper side, still stone cold,
i'll make some changes this winter

Man, gonna take some getting use to,
seems strange hearing the Cummins vs BB stroker

really climbs rpm's quick with the pump gear, jumped one tooth advanced.

extended the roll cage to protect the fuel tank and pump
got the wiring finished
I'm to cheap to buy the needed wire to run the battery in the trunk
so to save wire weight,
used the factory truck battery cables (shortened)
ground right to the starter
It cranks/ starts fast.
cut the firewall to install a home made battery box
Hope it doesn't de-value the car>>>lol>>>joke

next is to re set the rear axle pinion angle
hook up the neutral safety switch
finish installing the trans shield.
re-install the doors and front clip
give it a bath
try to find a track South of me
that is still open
to get a base time run
before I pull the head this winter> port work, springs, 3800 gov. etc.

Like what was said already, pour 1 gallon concentrate and one gallon water in, then use the empty jug to premix at 50:50 ratio before pouring in. It's always hard to judge exactly what will be needed and my opinion is if you premix, you never have to wonder if your concentration is correct.

if you dont live in cold part of country ( never freezes or barely ) , you dont need that much antifreeze ...

2 gallons + some water wetter willd do a better job at cooling .....

Ummm.....don't most sanctioning bodies require water ONLY in the cooling system so that a glycol (ethylene or propylene) leak won't foul the track??

TRUE

but, the tracks around here are closed for the season

got to keep the engines from freezing during the winter.....

come spring I'll drain, save antifreeze.
refill with water..
