Picked up my new 2018 3-4 days ago, had 166 miles because it was driven from a (related) dealer 150 miles away. After plowing thru the internet manuals/guidelines, I actually found a brief paragraph re: diesel engine breakin. Not to exceed 50mph nor towing for 1st 500 miles.

I got a chill. Is it possible the driver stayed under 50mph on 4 lane freeways? I don't think so. If those 1st 150 miles on MY new truck were at highway speeds, I believe the long term performance of MY diesel engine is compromised.

I called FCA Cust. Serv. @ 800-992-1997. They never heard of such a thing as data recording in the trucks, and cannot give me a # to call anyone with technical expertise. "Cust. Serv. is my only resource for FCA assistance."

I recall reading, somewhere, that late model vehicles are recording operational data similar to 'flight data recorder' to provide for accident analysis, e.g. how fast, when & how hard brakes were applied, seat belts being used, lights on/off, etc. ...or was it just a dream I had one morning? What's the emogi for a shaking head - never mind...

They record just the last couple seconds prior to a crash were the airbags deploy.
It's far away from a flight recorder.

Don't think to much about that, I'm pretty sure that 90% of the owners, the ones that do not read the manual, do not obey that phrase.

And the trucks run great anyways.

Are you sure that was Diesel engine info? Never seen anything about Diesel engine break in in any owners manual yet. In fact my diesel supplement says no break in necessary. No towing for the first 500 miles to break in the diff but nothing about the engine.

no break in on a 6.7 2018 cummins. my manual page 154 :

That's what I read 3 hrs ago on the truck's info screen. Glad to be here, glad you're here! Thanks all. P.S. Programmed garage opener today - ooo who!

We bought our 2015 from John Elway in Greeley, Co, drove up 287 to Laramie at 50-60 for 91 Miles. Got on I-80 and drove 80 MPH for 316 miles. Next day we drove 80 again for the first half of Idaho and then at the slower speed limits the rest of the way back to NW Washington. Truck now has 58K and have towed three different trailers to Az and back, the heaviest was 16K(twice). No drive train issues to date. First diff fluid change was nice and clear looking. Second fluid change will be in the next couple weeks, and it will get Amsoil again.

Relax and enjoy your new truck.

Long may she run!
Never mind the factory electronics, it’s the insurance companies and other moneymakers that want to plug telemetry into your vehicle to monitor you.
NYC is putting this into all passenger and light vehicles.

If I get in my shop rig and move it 5 feet without buckling up, my supervisors get an email instantly.

thats scary. ill bet vehicles in the next few years will go into limp mode if the seat belt isnt buckled. george orwell 1984. cheers comrade!

My 2017 Ram 5500 is the FIRST truck of 5 new Rams I followed breakin guidance. I live in rural area, so 50 mph and 500 miles was easy.

I think this is optimal breakin. I haven't seen any discernible mileage or performance on my current truck over previous trucks I've owned.

And with all the electronics 8.4Nav integrated phone and texting, I dont have ANY concerns about security, safety, or privacy.

You're good... enjoy the truck... remember song: DONT WORRY, BE HAPPY!

Congrats on the new truck.

Cheers, Ron

I seriously doubt NYC has the resources to pull and analyze vehicle computer data for anything short of collisions involving death. Might not be bad to show where the guy who was texting NEVER applied brakes AND was going 20mph over the speed limit when he hit you in the drivers door.

I actually purchased a traffic cam for all the little rice burners who cut me off when I'm running 33K lbs.

I don't think honest citizens need to be too worried about black box data.

Cheers, Ron

I support data/video Logging, Example car single to make right turn move into the right turn lane ...then change mind cross over the double white line back in right lane of HWY, right in front of Big truck ,the light turned YELLOW and the IDIOT driving the car nail on the brakes and the big truck rear-ended the car, The Truck driver received a ticket after the WORTHLESS cop believed the car driver, the truck driver was charged for the crash and was suspended from his Job pending the crash Investigation results.

After the video and log was present to crash investigators the Driver was cleared of all Charges, The Driver was paid for loss wages and returned to full working Status.

This is just one example......true event. O I almost forgot the log provide the info that the truck driver was NOT speeding and after comparing the Video time recorded showed the Driver applying the brakes before Yellow light with the car half over the double white line. The car driver was charged for the crash and sited for careless driving and causing a crash with Injuries.

NYC has surely pulled EDR data on trucks but not passenger cars.
Unless the courts and warrants are involved, I think EDR data in private vehicles are safe, and I believe there was a legal decision a while back to declare your own EDR as your data. In the case of a leased vehicle, that might be all different.

WOW, even George Orwell would be shocked, eh. I'm relating to Libertarians more & more.

Cool. At the risk of highjacking my own topic, I'll search for blogs here re: dash cameras (that we were already thinking about).

Not shocking at all. You are driving someone else's vehicle and they have liability for your actions. Plus, we all know how some people abuse company vehicles and use them for non-business purposes. And, on top of that, the sign on the vehicle is advertising for the company, which does not enjoy getting calls about how poorly their drivers drive or how fast they were speeding, etc. I am not a fleet owner but I can sympathize.
