2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Is a rear brake squeak that goes away upon brake application a cause for concern?

It seems to be normal but the truck did sit several weeks this past winter with the parking brake on. Could that cause any problems?

Hi Bob,



I have rear drums and mine squell also. After I adjust the brakes the noise goes away. Unless you have alot of miles or you ride your brakes like an old lady... ... ..... I would assume that's probably your issue also.

My theory on disk brake squeaks that go away upon brake application is that the pads are not retracting far enough from the disk. As the disk turns, the pads lightly touch the disk and the squeak results.



I had this condition with my front brakes on my 2000 truck. I called Sam Peterson, TDR member and brake expert, in Washington state. He sold me a kit and gave me instructions on how to eliminate the squeak. It's worked for the last 40,000 miles or so.



If you don't want to rebuild your brakes to eliminate the noise, I doubt that it will hurt anything to leave well enough alone.

Is it safe to assume the noise is not a safety issue? The truck is still under warranty... . just leary of bringing it back to the dealer. If not a safety concern, my only complaint is that it's embarassing.

I have a 2002, had the same thing, checked by a brake shop, no problem, just anoying.



Now have 16k, light squeel upon application has just completed going away. Probably pads lightly touching disc.

How long did you have your squeal before it went away? Since it doesn't seem to be a safety issue, I'll give it a little time before I change pads or turn rotors.

You do need to know one thing. When I was test driving the truck prior to purchase I did an intentional PANIC stop from 70 mph with the salesman and wife on board.



Clear road 70 mph SLAMMED on the brakes and held them hard to make sure it would stop a large truck from interstate speed (I knew I was going to tow a 10k trailer). I knew that it had ABS and 4 wheel disc brakes, but wanted to see for myself.



It definitely did a full panic stop straight as an arrow and seat bealts locked up and the whole thing (we all wound up bruised where the seat bealts come across the shoulder) (no airbags deployed). I might have glazed the pads with the panic stop I think.



Then it had a slight squeal when the pads were just getting to the rotors during a stop. If you applied the brakes quicker sometimes it would not squeal.



Now 16k miles and no squeal at all at any time. I have had the pads looked at every 5k to make sure they are ok. I check the rotors to make sure they are not scoring.

It matters. I have had this problem off and on with disc brakes. When I have had the problem, (first mainfested in a 1964 Mercedes 220S), it turned out to be the brake pads vibrating in their mounts. Just slightly resting my foot on the brake would stop it. The cure was to use some glurp in a tube that seems to (reversibly) glue the pad to the cylinder and caliper.



Wish I had rear discs on mine.
 
I also have the stupid squeak. Put the slightest pressure on the brake pedal and it stops. It's just plain annoying.

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you.



If my theory of the pads not retracting all the way is what is happening, then there is no safety issue regarding the squeak. I would imagine that the pads could wear more quickly with the slight rubbing on the rotor.



If they REALLY rubbed (enough to cause drag) the rotor could heat up, and that would be a safety concern, but I suspect that you would notice the drag right away.



I'm not a brake expert. These are just my thoughts on your issue since I had the same thing. Sam Peterson is the resident TDR brake guy.

Did you have anyone look at your truck? Your brakes sound (no pun intended) like mine..... the lightest touch on the pedal and the squeak goes away.

My 24V's brakes are like that, and it has the Full EGR Kit, drilled rotors, kevlar pads, SS brake hose.



A slight touch on the brake, and the noise dissapears.



My Dad's D-Max has a squeel when lightly appling the brakes, but goes away when you aren't on the brakes, or if you put more pressure on the brakes.



I've been around Heavy Duty, Light Duty trucks (oxymoron? nope) for a long time, and whenver you get the brakes hot enough,, especially whenever a little dirt is involved, they squeek, squeel, and do other barnyard noises. Never had a problem,, a constant pull, or grinding is bad, a squeel, or sqeek under no brake application, or light application is nothing to worry about,, but if it's loud, it can be emberassing!

My front's have done this to me twice now. First time was replaced under warranty after many repeat complaints of them just spraying brake quiet on them it turned out to be a cracked pad. Second time I did it myself and a couple thousand miles later they were squeeling till brake pressure was applied took them off and the pad was peeling from the metal back plate causing it to ride on the rotor just slightly making the noise.
 
Thanks for all replies. Since it's under warranty I may have the dealer look at it.



While going to an appointment Tuesday, I was using the off-ramp I always use. The ramp has a decent grade on it, and usually when I let off the throttle, the truck doesn't slow down, but Tuesday, the truck slowed to the point where I had to apply throttle.



When I got out of the truck 1. 5 miles later, I couldn't keep my hand on the left rear wheel, and there was that nauseating brake smell. Apparently, the drag just developed. When at a stop with a light grade, I take my foot of the brake and the truck doesn't roll back.



Does anyone think it's wise to go to the dealer, or should I just do it myself?
