Just talked to my mechanic's shop and was informed that when they replace my OEM shocks with my new Bilsteins an alignment is required.

Is this true?

What is the reason for that?

My truck is a '99 4WD with over 100K on it. They did an alignment to it in March when I replaced brakes, rotors and drums on all 4 corners.

I was hoping to save a couple $$$, but they're asking $200 to do the job. I won't kick if that's a fair price. I just want to be sure this is legit.

Thanks!!

NO!!!

They just want your money!

If you replace your shocks you do NOT need an alignment!

On front wheel drive vehicles that have struts and the strut replaces what was the "upper control arm" function - then you do need to get an alignment.

There - TDR just saved you more $$.

Damm..... I paid $70. 00 for the last alignment on my 4x4..... $200. 00? Stay clear of that place.

If you had a 2wd with A-arm suspension, and installed some heavy gas shocks that bring it up at all, then I could see it, but with a straight axle truck front end, there are no geometric changes that can occur by changing ride height.

Harold U, funny you should mention ATS. They were the 2nd place I called. And you are correct sir! They are an excellent resource to have so close to me an' my rig. They're only about 4 miles from my house.

Interestingly, the guy I spoke with about the shocks said that though an alignment isn't a necessity but did say it was recommended. Hmmm...

This morning I called my mechanic back and his service scheduler had made a mistake... (SURPRISE!)... the procedure didn't call for an alignment after all.

The $200 will be greatly reduced, since that was the charge for shock install AND alignment.

I love the work these guys do on my rig and have NEVER had a problem with any repairs, maintenance, etc. that they've done for me. Just gets a little pricey sometimes. So I ask my questions and ask for alternatives... and like today... things can work out for the better!

Thanks again, guys! I love this place! TDR ROCKS!
