Cummins conversion Vids.

Common rail swap into older truck

I have been working on the 72 for a number of years and it seems I always want to try and make something better. Right now I am wiring in a new fuse block and rewiring most of the truck with it. I always say that there is not much more that I want to do, but then I decide to mess with something for the winter and get into a project. I do not think that I will ever truly be finished. If anyone is really done maybe you can give me some tips on how to overcome my "addiction to tinkering" as the wife calls it. I do enjoy learning and doing it myself though. The TDR has been wonderful for feeding the addiction so far.

more detail

Well the motor was picked up from a junk yard for 500 bucks. Good thing too because all the accessories get expensive, but they are all new anyways. Hopefully they last a while then.

The transmission was the most expensive with the clutch to hold the power. NV4500 is what is in there. Truck was an auto, but the conversion was easy. I found a clutch peddle on ebay and then I powder coated it to match the interior. I used a slave and master set up off a 02 dodge that I found on ebay too. The clutch peddle throw is a little short which makes it stiff with the different clutch also.

The truck has 4:10 gears combined with the 35" Super Swampers and it goes down the road well. It tops out at about 75mph is the worst thing, but the power down low makes it a blast to drive. The best milage I have gotten is 27mpg and the worst is 21mpg. It is a pretty light truck for the cummins to throw around.

That Chevy is Sweet! Nice Job!

As far as "are they really ever done",. . check out my video in my sig and listen to the last line. .

Answer,... no. .

I like the looks of the exhaust. I just have a straight pipe coming off the turbo right now. No one in AK bends 4" (that I know of) and I have not got around to doing any flex pipe. I guess there are other priorities that I make up.

I went down to the truck store and bought various 90's and 45's a muffler and 10' of straight pipe.

I have put over 40K on mine to date and it's not finished yet. Maybe after I build a set of twins it will be... Naaa

Pay over $45K and make nearly $900 monthly payments on one and you can'nt afford to tinker anymore.

Reason #1 that I'm sticking to superficial stuff with $634/month payments. less then 2 years to go tho :)

Then you have the a few things to ponder..... New Car (I have my sights on a new Challenger). If me and the girl hook up. She'll need a few car more then I need a new toy... . Then again, If I'm correct, it may be a good time to sell and upgrade the house and an extra $634/month would make for a house with a garage that doesn't suck

Maybe I should just buy lottery tickets... :)

Tinkering does cost money. I dont think I want to add up receits on the project, but I do keep tabs on what the 2004 has been costing me, including the purchase price. I am glad that I have zero payments so I can afford to tinker. I enjoy it, but usually when I am curious to figure things out, it costs more than anticipated.

It never stops! I am still tinkering on the 90 and the 05 and have a list of things still to do. How is that 04 running? The previous owner of that 04 sold his Duramax and is back into an 05 Cummins:-laf I love it!

You still up here in AK, should get together and BS a bit.

JCrockett, The 04 has been doing well. I replaced the ball joints and then the blend door broke, but that is all for troubles. I am still in AK, but moved to Anchorage. I sold my house by you and then found out the military was keeping me here one more year. I leave in April so we will have to get together before I leave for sure.

Here is a picture of the old fuse block. I took this one out and replaced with one from painless wiring. It added more circuits and was a pretty easy install. There was thirty five years of hacking on the old wire harness and some of the lights would come on when you hit the brakes. All of that mess is gone and everything is working properly again. The new fuse block made it really easy as everything was labeled with what goes where from painless.
