My son has a 96 2500ram 4x4, with 109,000. He says that first gear is starting to slip. We replaced fuilds with Asmoil synthetic, swap filter, and readjusted bands, This helped a little, but he wants a rebuilt ATS transmission. He plans on no MODS to engine. He is pulling an 8000 lbs travel trailer a couple months (5000 miles) a year mostly hilly mountain region, 50% of time averaging 20 to 30 mph. His Question is, should he spend the extra $800 for Billet Input Shaft? Listed Below are the 2 Transmission he is trying to decide on.

Part Description - $5133

-ATS 47RE Transmission

-ATS 5 Star Viskus Clutch Drive Torque Converter

-ATS Deep Pan

-ATS Billet Input Shaft

-ATS Co

-Pilot 4wd

Has he considered Goerends Bros. transmissions? They are considerably cheaper, and I dont think anyone will debate the quality and customer service offered by them. If he is heartset on ATS, no he does not need a billet input shaft, especially with a bone stock motor.

some as fordcummins HTS Transmissions are great on price and can get it built to what he need it for but if set an ats the billet shaft isn't nessecery I have berg warner clutch plate HTS vavle body and dual stage convertor on mine stock input shaft. still good mine will break soon but I keep adding HP for him If he stays stock or even mod it some it still should be fine I pull 3000lbs of a cargo trailier almost everyday during the week I put about 20,000 miles a year on truck with trailier attached plus I drag the truck now and I pull a 25' cabin cruisier boat 50 miles one way to lake Michigan every couple weekend in summer to fish and mine has held up good and I'm hard on the throttle on take off alot.

Are you sure he needs thh copilot? I believe on the RE that is just a speed selected lockup controller. I too would suggest Dave Goerend. I have his transmission in my puller and it has performed flawlessly. I drive my truck hard on the street and track, broken two welded carriers(spools), one spider gear, on front drive shaft, but my transmission has been flawless. The broken parts were in a Dana 80 also. Great guy, great product, great service!!

yes i would go with the billet input and output shaft. i bought a suncoast transmission and my input shaft broke,of coarse i have done sum mods but when you going to spend 4 to 5 grand i would think its better to be safe. whos to say down the road he will want more power. lot cheap to do now then later. i can say that hurt buying new transmission and spending another $1500 to fix 6months later

If you put in a GOOD convertor the need for the input shaft is real, especially towing if you don't like to baby it. I am sure you can beat that ATS price :-laf

More INPUT

I 'm very happy with my ATS... . :)

Customer service was and still is top notch.

I would go with the Billet input.

I have a very mild 360 hp tune.

I broke my stock input. :--)

Quality converter? you will need a billet input!

Exhaust brake? Billet input

Big tires? Billet.

Better safe than sorry Billet input.
