As a follow up to the fuel problem I've been working on. At the last step of my fix (overflow valve replaced--fuel prescreen kit and new upper heater gasket) I was getting 22-24psi @idle but NOT @2000rpm unloaded (stopped--in neutral--NOT coasting down a hill in the 2000rpm range). Those fixes cleaned up the blue smoke & the bad stumble @2200rpm but above 2200 it was very weak. There was much conflicting info here & elsewhere as to if that was OK & normal(22-24@all rpms). Trusting Marks advice @ TST I went for the new lift pump. #ad
Now I'm getting 30psi@2000rpm unloaded. On Subsequent test drive I found out It is no longer weak above 2200rpm. As a matter of fact it RIPS all the way to 3000rpm! Its like driving a whole new truck!

Note to anyone doing a lift pump:
One does NOT have to follow the DC manual.
1)starter does not have to be removed.
2)Fuel Heater & lift does not have to be removed as a unit.
3)All can be easily done from the top if you remove the regular filter.

NOW I have a baseline to start my bombing!

As My 1st step, I need advice on proper wastegate adjustment (how to & how much) to compliment when I move the stock plate fwd.
Thanks!
Mike

Yes I got it from Cummins Rky Mtn. They had the best price. CRM has excellent service & I was able to set up an a/c w/ them to make it even easier to order parts. They sent it out next day. It was $142. 35. Mopar4less& Dodge was 14. 5% & 17. 3% higher, respectively.
Gasket cost $1. 28

I think I'll to look into that lift pump thing to. The truck is a little sluggish lately. But I'm gonna clean the screans and replace the ring too. Also time for a valve adjust too. But I am waiting for the parts for now.

Has anyone tried Tork Technology's adjustable overflow valves? I have a tractor with a 230hp 8. 3L Cummins that is low on fuel pressure, 26-27psi at idle and the same at higher rpm. It should be over 30psi no load for sure. It has a larger lift pump inlet than our trucks 1/2" line rather than 3/8". On my '97 when I changed both the overflow and lift pump performance went up drastically. This lift pump doesn't tick yet but it has 4500hrs on it. Send me a pm if you like Rob.

One of the reasons I went to a electric fuel system was the flow and wanting a constant fuel flow.

mikepvg, you should of pm or e-mailed me I could of told that the pressure should been higher at 2000 rpm(revving in P or N) than at 750 rpm. ;):D 22 to 24 psi is ok at idle.

i have my stock valve tweaked to provide 32-34 at highway speeds, truck waked up a little when i upper the pressure from upper 20s at speed, it idles in the mid 20s on a 4-5 year old lift pump

I ordered a couple of Tork Tech's adjustable overflow valves to use with a couple of P pumps in some 8. 3L cummins one in a tractor and one in a combine. We'll see how they work.

I am not making fuel. It is clear now that I'm getting about 15psi at idle, and not much more at 2500rpms when the engine is just warmed up. At full operating temp the pressure goes down to 12 psi at idle and not much more at 2500rpms. I have a new fuel heater elbow hose to install and will see if this cures the low fuel pressure. Interesting how I lose pressure once the truck is at full operating temperature. Wonder what that means.

I installed a new fuel overflow valve from LarryB's last week. The truck has a new fuel filter and new preheater filter as of last week.

Tork Tech sent me a snubber/banjo bolt which I installed on a grease gun hose and a silicone filled Marshall fuel pressure gauge. Even with the snubber the fuel gauge bounces in a 4 degree span.

I lose a little press when the fuel warms up too.

Drove to Maine and back few days back. It NEVER went under 25 psi at any time. 68 MPH and 2000 RPM's the entire way. I got just under 16 MPG's.

Confirmed low fuel pressure this morning. Crank truck up and fuel pressure at idle is around 15-16 psi. Drive it until up to normal operating temp and the fuel pressure goes down to 12psi.

Will just go ahead and order new lift pump then replace the elbow hose on the fuel pre-heater. And at the same time I think I'm just going to remove the heater.

Sounds like a plan.

When my LP went it would run OK, but would cut out when it was running and I drained the filter for water.

Just a thought.

Good luck with the new lift pump. I went through a handful of mechanical lift pumps with a lot of frustration. Guess they don't make them like they used to. Finally switched to an AirDog that is usually giving me between 20 and 40 psi. AirDog told me the Cummins runs fine as long as it has a minimum of 25 psi.

Last lift pump I bought was made in China like everything else. The originals seem to last ~ 4-5000hrs. The price was also higher than an USA built one a few years ago. Somebody is making a pile of money. Charging more $$$ and you are buying more of them because they don't last. I guess buy an Airdog or FASS and be done with it.

Wow!

Hi Cummins owners

I am sharing this information on the Cummins lift pump. We tested the fuel sytem over a period of 14 months. The article reveals ACTUAL flow rates of the Carter lift pump. I hope you can use this information.
