yesterday i ghanged the fuel filter and could not get the truck to start . If i spray air filter with staring fluid it will run,but when i stop sparying the truck stops running . could it be a bad fuel pump or something else ?

Did you prime the filter after you changed it. It takes nearly 80 pump on my primer to get the air out, and then it still cranks a while before starting up. I'd go easy on the starting fluid. That stuff is BAD news for diesels.

First, I believe the manual says never use starting fluid on these engines, you can destroy your engine, did you prime the fuel filter? Check your fuel pressure, check your fuel lines to see if they are cracking and sucking air. There are a lot of causes. Was it blowing any smoke? How many miles? Post a signature so people can see what you have. I place the filter on top of the starter and fill it with diesel then put it on,never have used the primer.

If you have any form of an air leak, you will have a really hard time priming the fuel system. Even if you don't have an air leak, it takes a lot of pumping on the primer bulb.

If you have access to compressed air, you can regulate it down to 5psi or so and wrap a rag around the air line and put it in your fuel filler neck with the bleeder open. This will prime the fuel system quickly.
