Just got my new engine and did the timing.

Legal to put a diesel engine in a gas chassis in California?

Does anyone know if you can get a 4bt certified for use in CAlifornia in a light duty truck. I think that engines from medium or heavy duty trucks generally can not be used in light duty vehicles unlesss, of course, you start with something that is smog exempt already, like a diesel or a pre 1974.

I believe that you can get it certified only if a Diesel engine was an option for that year and weight rating for the truck. Say your trying to fit a half ton Dodge with a Diesel, that would be illegal, It would have to be at least a 3/4 ton to get it certified and from 1989 and on.

I don't think that's quite right. I think that if the engine you want to use was used in the class of vehicle you want to put it in then it is legal. i. e. , you could put a GM 6. 2 (though who would want to) in a 1/2 ton Dodge because the GM 6. 2's came in 1/2 ton Chevys. Also, however, the engine must be as new or newer than the chassis. I might be wrong but I think that is how it works.

Well if what your saying is true, Then no. I don't think that the 4bt was ever run in a light duty truck (1/2 ton or less) Sold in CA

Chev did put Diesel's in half ton trucks! But I believe that it (Diesel option)would have to have been offered by the manufacture to make it legal to do a swap. You could say take a trip to England (UK) there you would find diesel's every thing. Then all you would half to do to import it would be to bring the Jeep up to safety standards for that year.
