I just had my DTT transmission installed. Is it ok to leave my Edge Comp Box on 5x5 all the time (assuming I'm careful not to get on it , until the transmission fluid warms up)?

No I didn't get billet shafts. I didn't think I needed them for my current HP/Torque levels (approx. 330/700).

No, it is not advised to leave the comp on 5x5 and drive slow till it warms up on any automatic. Call Bill and ask him that question directly.
 
No way I would leave my comp on 5x5 all the time regardless of the transmission. You need to let the engine warm up to operating temp before you turn it up. The same is true for the transmission. I don't run the truck hard at all till the transmission temp gauge reads at least 80 degrees.
 
whats the difference between to comp on (130HP) and someone running a large set of injectors (200HP+)



I agree it's not wise but I bet there are some who do. :-laf

Won't leaving the comp box in 5x5 and taking it easy , during warm up, with the throttle pedal be the same as having the comp set to a lower setting?

Leaving the comp on 5X5 is much harder on the VP44 than a set of 130 hp injectors. I personally would never run mine that way. I'm betting you will see VP failure much quicker under the extra heat and stress.
 
hey jon! if you dont mind I GOTTA DRIVE THAT RIG!!!!! :eek: gimme a call or let me know when we can get together, i need to feel the dtt difference, and well eventually be putting out around the same hp/tq numbers as you so i am really interested here! i am purty free this weekend let me know. i just ordered a transgo shift kit for my stocker, hopefully i can squeeze a few more miles out of it before i can go dtt. see ya soon!
 
Jon,if you need the comp on anything over level 3,on a daily basis,then you need bigger injectors. The VP44 wont like level 5,neither will the trans, by design the comp fuels very hard at light throttle on 5x5,while this may feel cool,it isnt any good for the trans or Vp44. Will it kill the DTT trans? I highly doubt it, i ran mine like that (with huge injectors)trying to hurt it but couldnt do anythign other than make lots of smoke,and bark my turbo hard on the shifts. Run on level 3 at the most every day. Get your desired injector,and use Level 1 for daily driving,for max VP44 life. Use levels 3-5 for occasional show off mode, or racing only.

How do bigger injectors (bigger than 275's) make it easier on the VP at the higher Comp (3-5)settings? Is it because the bigger the injector, will allow the VP to keep the injectors "open" for less time for a given fuel rate?

The bigger injectors allow you to run the comp on a lower setting for a given amount of HP,which in turn works the pump less to get it. What im saying is a comp and DD1's will make about 380,if you ran on 5x5. You can get the same HP by using mach 3 and running the box on level 1-2. The vp 44 will last a lot longer like that,and same hp. Also IF you turn the box up it will be insane(but so will egts without the proper turbo). Make most of your daily driver Hp with injectors,save the hi settings on the box for racing only.

I was under the mistaken idea that once I beefed up my transmission, I could just run my Edge comp box at 5x5 full time, with any worries. I had never heard that running the comp on the higher power levels would have a negative affect on the reliability of the VP44.



What about running the comp on 5x1, 5x2, and 5x3 (still the highest comp power settings, but using edge's so called "de-fueling" modes), would that prevent hurting the VP44 when used as a full time setting?

Jon,you can run the comp on 5x5 all the time,it just isnt going to maximize the vp44 life. . Somehow my vp44 has survived 110K of hard use,and racing,with a drag comp,and most of my miles were with the comp on levels 1-3. With the Mach 2. 5s i have in now i run it on level 3 a lot. With the mach 6s i run it off or level 1 most of the time. My truck makes about 400hp without the box with the mach 6s,and about 300-325hp with the 2. 5s without the box on. The other thing most important to vp44 life is the fuel supply system,and maintaining adequete pressure. This becomes more of an issue on 5x5,since your pulling so much fuel. Remember big injectors make hp without working the pump harder ,they just return less fuel to the tank under heavy throttle. They actually ease the load on the pump a little,since they deliver the shot of fuel faster than a stock injector. The comp box adds hp by holding the pump soleniod closed longer,forcing the vp44 to work harder,and deliver hi pressures over a longer duration. I hope this helps a little.
 
I usually daily drive on 3X3 and tow on 2X2 to keep from smoking my trailer up on long hills. 3X3 with the Mach 3s is quicker than most vehicles out there and makes it a hoot to drive. 5X5 with the Drag Comp is kind of smoky and warm. With the regular comp it didn't get warm but was still smoky.
