Driving on a logging road over the weekend heard a whine like metal against metal coming from clutch/trans area. Pulled over and put in neutral, clutch engaged. Noise "spooled down" and stopped. Put in 2nd and started to drive, same noise "spooling up" like grit stuck between clutch disk and flywheel. Kept driving and noise eventually stopped. Is it possible that a stone or some grit flew into the bellhousing through the weep hole? And then ground itself out as I drove?

Most of the time if something gets between the flywheel and pressure plate the clutch will not release. Your only looking at a few . 000"s clearence from engaged to released. The foriegn matter most time is bigger than that.

Now something could have gotten between the back of the flywheel and the the block. It would give the same sound. But the clutch would work normaly.
