Hey guys,

Recently I had a blown headgasket replaced by a very well respected diesel mechanic at a local dealership. As it turns out he said the head wasn't torqued down right from another dealer when they put a new short block in for the preivious owner. Anyway, the truck runs better than it ever has since I've owned it however, I can sometimes hear the popping/cracking/snapping of metal now while the engine is running and sometimes after shut down. I'm 99% sure it's coming from the manifold. I called the mechanic and asked about it but he said that is fairly common on these trucks and not to worry/assume that the manifold is getting ready to bust because I can now hear metal expanding/contracting. I specifically asked about why it's doing it now and not before and he speculated that because the head and exhaust manifold is now torqued down right (and neither was before) it is now making the sound.

Any thoughts?

I wouldn't worry about it too much, the 24v manifolds are prone to breakage, but I doubt you could hear it happening. How many miles fo you have on it and do you tow heavy or run heavy? Seems to be that the heavier you run (obvioiusly the hotter) and thus more apt to break it.

I've heard alot of guys talk about hearing the exhaust pipes (particulary downpipe) snap and pop after a run. Nothing abnormal and no problems.

Probably time to purchase or plan for a 3 piece manifold. I've heard popping and cracking on my truck and on gassers as well. I wouldn't worry to much about that.

About one weekend a month I pull my travel trailer that is about 9-10k fully loaded. Usually we're talking about a 200 mile RT but last weekend for example I pulled it 600 miles.

I wouldn't worry about it. I have an ATS manifold, and although I don't hear the manifold making noises anymore, I still hear the stainless steel expanding/contraction in the exhaust system. Anyway, like John said, you couldn't find a better excuse for replacing it with an ATS manifold. Get one and while you're at it, get it ceramic coated too. It sure looks good.

Mine pops and makes noise EVERY time I shut it off. It has for over 120K miles and no cracks at all. Don't worry about it IMO.
