Ok, I put new batteries in after the previous problems mentioned (Ref: https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/truck-911/219618-batteries-generator-neither-both.html )

In short, I had a CarQuest battery crap out, and it showed as a "BAD" battery at thee parts store on their tester.

Just installed two new DieHard Platinums. Truck started extremely fast. Considering it is b9 degrees out and it has been sitting for a few days, I was real impressed by how fast it spun over. Like wow!

Let the truck run for a bout five minutes while I finished up some things, and took a look at the dash. The Volt meter was no longer reading, and the check guages light came on again.

Is my generator kicking out because it is dying? (Dead). Does it take a few minutes for the PCM or ECM to read and accept a bad signal from the Generator before it starts to set a code?

I have to see if I can figure out how to check the Generator output.

Any help would be appreciated. the parts guy said the old battery was internally shorted. I wonder if that cooked the generator.

Thanks guys.

Quick update.

Just checked it again. Started the engine, and ran it for ten minutes. No Check Guages light and Volt Gauge read good.

So, decided to take wife back to work in my truck just to give it a little road time without going too far. Well, we made it the four hundred feet to the end of the driveway. The Check Guages light came back on and the Volt meter bottomed out.

I am going to check for 5 volts at temp sensor and then will have to go to NAPA for a rebuild. Been losing too much time on this and missed a few opportunities for a couple days work. I just hope that fixes it. I guess the charging system on these truck aren't as smart as i thought they were.

By the way, I checked the service manual. there is no electrical testing proceedures shown for the generator. Basically, the PCM checks it for you. Kinda' weird.

Installed a replacement generator, Reman from NAPA ($175). Truck seems to be fine. Let it run while i put tools up and then took it for a short test drive. Short because I slipped on the ice moving around the nose of the truck and put my left knee out. So, now my left landing gear is stuck in the full extended position. :-laf:-laf :{ Shifting is too painful for a longer test drive. Some day I will have to have those cruciate ligs. delt with

Anyhow, the Volt meter on the dash was reading about 14+ a little which I don't remember it ever reading that high before. Oh well, at least it ain't zero! So, I guess that is it, the bad Car Quest 70month 2 year old battery shorted out and killed my alternator. The first of that pair of batteries died similarly, but i guess it didn't short to ground (?) because I only ended up with a dead battery and not all this other crap and codes. That battery was only 9 months old.

thanks for the help on the previous thread.
