When i started home from work this evening, the outside air temp. was about 45. The truck started fine, and the grid heater seemed to be cycleing as usual. After a short idle time i left the parking lot and i noticed the amp gage was still pulled down as if the grid heater was on. I thought it should go off after i reached a set speed. I got all the way up to 65mph, and the amp gage was still pulled down, and stayed down for probably another 3 or 4 minutes, then went back to normal.

If it might be the grid heater sticking, where are the relays located on my 97 ?

Thanks Stick

The relays are on the drivers side fender. Follow the wires from the grid heaters and you'll end up at the relays.

I know what you are talking about. Mine has done it a couple of times. It did it yesterday morning. I was sitting at the building supply place about to freeze my rear off and so I cranked up. It cycled a few times and then pulled down and held there for a while. I finally drove around the parking lot and it came back to normal on the voltmeter.

I'm not sure if there is a point where it goes one last long time on really cold days before it stops cycling or what the deal is. I don't think your relays are sticking. Usually once they stick, they are toast.

Don't think your relay's sticking or it probably would have stayed on. Grids are supposed to go off at 17 mph, for some reason your speed isn't being communicated to the pcm or the pcm is ignoring it. Is the cruise working ok?

Then again it may have been something other than the grids that was causing the draw, any fuses blown?

Bill:

Your probably right, from what i have checked so far it doesn't seem to be the relays or the Air Intake Sensor.

I haven't used the cruise yet to see if it works. When i started this morning everything worked as it should.

My god i hope it's not the PCM !

My grid heater comes on before I start the truck, then when the engine starts, they go off and stay off. I like it that way... :D

Such an easy fix.

How did you fix it. Mine typically goes off once I am driving, but it sounds to me like yours doesn't function at all once it is running. Am I right?
