Hi there,

I was just changing the oil on my 2001 CTD, 26,000 miles, and when I removed the turbo to air filter hose, was looking at the turbo and I can feel side to side movement on the impeller shaft. The impeller spins freely, but if I put a side load on the shaft, it binds up on the compressor housing. Tell me what else I need to check before I go to the dealer on Monday morning. Thanks in advance for your help. Jay

Some side to side movement is normal, but I've never seen one hit the sides. Remember the turbo is spinning so fast and is so hot that bearings would toast. For this reason the shaft runs on a cushion of oil over loose fitting bushings. That's why turbo cool-down and good quality oil changed at the proper intervals is so important on a turbo diesel.

It should NOT hit the sides. Take it in and get a new turbo put on before very bad things happen. Bark the turbo or continue running it like it is and things will go bad in a hurry.

you might also want to put a paper air filter in before taking it in to the dealer they have begun blaming K&N for problems...

Thanks all, and bob I thought about that also. I think I'll put the stock paper filter in and remove the K&N sticker on the airbox. I pulled the hose on another 2001 this morning with an HX35 and it seems to have about the same amount of play. I don't know if I was actually dragging on the housing or just putting enough pressure on the impellor shaft to bind things up, which probably also shouldn't happen. I'm still headed to the dealer tomorrow. I have been trying to hold off on bombing, but this does sound like a good reason to start. Been looking at some of the stuff on Piers site, we'll see what happens. Thanks Again.
