I did a clutch and throw-out bearing replacement in ten hours with the help of a friend. Doing the rear main would have been an easy task once the transmixer and t-case were out. I did have the benefit of a full tilt garage, complete with floor lift, air tools, loooong extentions on the sockets, and a couple of tall floor jacks. The Trans/T-case unit weights alot, so make sure you have several good jacks if you're going to attempt it at home. Also, as long as you're in that deep, consider replacing any parts which are "close" to needing it along the way. The only glitch we encountered was getting the T-case crossmember to line back up... that was a whole lot of weight to inch back and forth to mate the 6-8 bolt holes. Good luck...

I guess that is what is leaking bad on mine also, had hoped maybe it was the back of the oil pan, seems to leak worse if parked on a hill with the tail end downhill and running, other times its about a 2" puddle for 3-4 minutes. I dont need to add much oil but it seems to be leaking more than I put in. Is the rear seal the only thing it can be?

JSimpson, replacing the rear main seal in the cummins is a lot more involved than just dropping the oil pan and removing the rear seal cap like on a gas engine. Every thing on the rear of the engine has to come off. The seal is one piece and has to go over the end of the crank. I would get a factory service manual before I tackled this job. I hope Joe Donnelly or some other cummins expert will provide some helpful tips on this job! Good luck.

Thanks Gene; I have the Cummins manual, and it looked that way to me too. I instructed the transmission shop that built my transmission to replace the seal. They said they did, but they didn't.
