Here I am

Is something wrong, or was I expecting too much?

OK, just got my new transmission installed, and hooked up the Smarty for the first time. Midrange power and higher is GREAT, however, I didn't think I would lose low end power. .

I've tried every setting I can, and no matter how I set it, my take off from a dead stop is slow. Lots of black smoke on anything higher than SW#3 (which I expected), but no takeoff. The truck slowly accelerates until the engine gets to about 1600 RPM and then the smoke clears out and it takes off. How slow is it? - My stock run down '93 takes off faster than this!

I wasn't really looking for tire shredding acceleration, but I didn't expect to lose power down low.

Any thoughts???

No, transmission works great. Truck accelerates fine with stock software.

Maybe I din't explain my frustration correctly...
At an intersection from a dead stop with stock software, if I mash the go pedal the truck grunts and takes off... with any of the Smarty software loaded it won't do that. When I mash it it just barely rolls along until I start to build some boost and then it goes. By that time I'm already through the intersection and on my way down the road with a thick black cloud in the mirror. :-laf And while fun in its own way, its not what I had in mind as far as performance adders go.

And yes if I keep my foot on the brake and build boost before I "launch" it will ignite the tires, but thats no good for daily driving.

I guess I didn't expect that adding a programmer would take away from dead stop acceleration - I thought it would add to it if anything.

You need to tell us your exact Smarty settings for timing and torque management. With mild or higher torque management, you should be able to light up the tires w/o trying.

You also need to tell us your TC stall speed.

Did you get a high stall converter??

Thats what I was led to beleive.

Torque management set to 4 which I understand to be the least available using the Smarty - I've also tried leaving on default on the various levels. As far as timing goes I've tried every setting 1-4 on various Catcher levels ( 3, 4, 5, 9 ). I've noticed with less timing it takes longer to build boost, but there is less black smoke. The PoD level is set at default 99. Regaurdless, there is no motivation from a stop no matter how I set it. It just feels like it falls on its face. And don't get me wrong, once I get to about 8-10 lbs of boost it GOES, its just it takes so long to get there.

I do not know the torque converter stall speed, but again with stock software loaded it still takes off from a stop just like it did before the new trans - maybe a little better as it now definitly shifts firmer.

OK,Disconnect Batteries leave Driver door open, than close driver door and reconnect batteries, open door turn key to on positions (DO NOT START ENEGINE) Then push the go pedal to the carpet SLOWLY push hard when it hits the carpet, do this 3 times, than turn key off, do this procure 3 times including the battery disconnect, then start the engine and see if it makes a difference. With Smarty Loaded.

My friend's stock '06 will spin the tires lightly from a dead stop when you just mash the pedal --- that was all I really wanted. Like I said earlier, I'm not looking to shred the tires from every stoplight. Shouldn't this motor make enough power to do that before making boost? -Like the stock '06??

TWest, I'll give it a shot tonight. I have heard of doing this before except for the whole door open when disconnecting the batteries part - I'm guessing this is to let the dome light draw any residual power??

I gave it a shot over lunch... no change. The truck just won't develop power until after its making about 8lbs of boost or so. Could it be a bad sensor without throwing any codes?

LCaldwell,Do you have a Rail Pressure gauge installed. if so what is the Readings. If you are not spiking at WOT throttle their is no Fuel to create Boost. . You know my # so call if you would like.

No, I don't have any FP gauge. But I wll agree it feels like its starving, but if that were the case, would I still see the massive amount of black smoke?

Not Always. Off the line Performance needs to have everything weight and measured and consider equal. . This includes the dry side (Electronics),many things could cause this, elimination is the process to narrow it down. . also balance cannot be overlooked. When everything is correct ,you will not be guessing if its right, you will know it is. .

Yeah, counted the shifts, I'm in 1st.
Without a rail gauge I have no way of knowing whats going on pressure wise, but would a bad relief valve do this? Maybe loss of pressure until RPMs are up high enough to make enough fuel pressure. Can a reliefe valve bleed pressure a little bit? Or is it more like all or nothing?

You said, "OK, just got my new transmission installed". Was your trans STOCK before? Remember the stock torque converter lets the engine spin up some, high stall speed. A performance built trans has a tighter torque converter, lower stall speed.

I hope you get this figured out, because my trans does the same thing. Everytime i try to get answers, everyone tells me to get a smarty. Well, you have a smarty and have the same trouble. so keep askin and ill keep watching. LOL
